slot rims
« on: November 18, 2005 - 01:28:15 PM »
I was just wondering how popular the sloted mag wheels were back in the day when these cars were still fairly young.  I was wondering because so many project cars on ebay have them and so many on carsinbarns have them too.  Were they really that popular because it seems like they all had them at one point.  I dont really remember because I am only 21 now.

They were a popular wheel on all cars, not just our E-bodys.
I stole a set from my brother for a '69 Cougar I had.
They still look good IMO, on some cars.

Back in the day, it was 5 slots or Cragars. There wasn't a Kazillion choices like there is today. Then there was always the rich kid that had unpolished Centerlines!!! Wow, I am OLD!!!

Those were the same rims the (Close your eyes if you don't want to see mention of a Ferd) Starsky and Hutch Torino had in the TV series.  Often if you see an old 60'/70's kit car like a Bricklin or something VW based they'll have those rims too.

Those look like aluminum alloy of some sort and my guess is that they may have been lighter than the Crager SS or Keystone Klassics that were popular back then so they might be better for racing.  Just a wild guess.

Yep, back in the 70's-80's It was Slots, Cragars and Centerlines mainly with a few Keystones. Once I got rich in 1983 I bought a set of 15 x 3.5 Centerlines for the front of my 71 Duster LOL
My 72 Challenger came with some polished 14" slots, but now has been replaced with 15" Centerlines.
I was never a big fan of the Keystones, but the other three I still enjoy seeing on old muscle cars. The old school look on a muscle car just looks killer to me, I guess I'm getting old too.
Now when are Elephant bells, and black derby Jackets coming back???? <---If you know what I'm talking about then YOU TOO are getting OLD!!!! LOL

I'm only 2 years younger than you and I have no idea what those things are!  I gotta go out and see the world.

I also do like the old school/period look on these cars.  I hear these rims are hard to come by used in good shape, the slotted rims.  I see them being produced now but they are very expensive.  I forget how much but somewher between $250-$400 per rim sounds familiar.

I think they definately have a cool old school look to them.  A guy in my neighborhood has them on a 65 max wedge satellite that he used to street race in the 70s and 80s.  I think they look killer on it.

I agree, it almost seems like they were made for the 71-74 Bs.

Here some picture of Slots on my car. I suppose they look okay. I've been thinking about Supertricks lately or some Cragar SS.
