correct underbody for 70
« on: November 20, 2005 - 09:05:42 PM »
So what was the original factory look for the underbody of the 70 E-body? Hamtramck, if it makes any difference.

The guy who is going to do my car thinks that the body paint was sprayed on the underside also, but others have told me that the original cars were dipped in a big bath to about 1/2 way up the firewall in a primer or something, and then just a lot of overspray on the bottom of the car when the car was painted. (And we all know it was lousy, whatever they did).

It seems like this was discussed recently, but I don't remember a consensus as to what was originally done. Trying to be as original as possible with restoration on mine. And if I sell it, "original" definitely helps the value on my car.

It's primer underneath with color only where it was overspray.

I had the same question a few weeks back and the guy doing my body wants to do a black undercoating and says thats correct but what I have decieded to do is go with a Rhino Liner sprayed on the under side in the body color of Plum Crazy. This way I can drive it and not worry about the road and it will also provide rust protection and it will be easy to wipe down to give it that new look.

I do remember that thread and I responded to it. I since heard that they actually dipped the cars in a primer bath on the assembly line.

But what color was the primer? I want to double check everything to make sure he does it correct.
