Pump Gas---"Regular or Premium"?
« on: November 22, 2005 - 08:45:55 PM »
I assume that a lot of you have engines that require the use of premium unleaded.  I know that my '69 does.  You know those pumps that dispense ALL grades through ONE nozzle, what you pump is whatever grade you select, but it all comes from the same nozzle..  Ever wonder how much the premium gets diluted due to the regular gas that is in the lines between the pump and the nozzle?   If the last customer bought regular and then you purchase premium, the first bit of fuel you get is gonna be regular.   I have a 12 gallon fuel cell, so this dilution adds up over time.  It is even more critical in my motorcycle--(BMW K1200LT-C).  This is due to the smaller fuel tank.  I have learned which stations dispense the premium through dedicated nozzles and this is the only place that I get gas for my vehicles that require premium.  Just a thought.......................Oldschool

I never would have thought of that.  How much do you estimate is in the pipe before pumping?

I am not sure, but some of the cycle sites that have had this discussion have stated anywhere between a quart and a half gallon. It depends on how the pumps are set up and who manufactured it. They all vary somewhat.........Oldschool

I pump Sunoco 93 octane from a "dedicated " pump . It was for this exact reason! I never even thought about passing it on. Great point !

Regular for me too.  This is a real good topic.

My car's 72 340 engine is still stock so buying the cheaper grade of gas may be the only benefit of the lower 8.5:1 compression!
(Actually, the second benefit would be if I chose to add a centrifugal supercharger I wouldn't need an engine rebuild.  I'm just dreaming....I wish I had that problem of only having to use the premium with 10.25:1 compression...sob..sob... (insert sad smiley))

Well, Oldschool, you could just aim the nozzle out into space a pull the trigger a few times to get the "bad" gas out.  That could make for some real exciting times!  Whoo Hoo!

I've thought about that before but never really concerned me too much since all I drive right now runs on the regular,  but on another note, I dunno how true it is,  I had a guy tell me that when they fill the tankers up its all the same fuel.  For the higher octanes they add a extremely potent sort of "octane boost".  He said its like in quarts and is high dollar stuff not available to the public.  :dunno: If this is the case, wonder how exact the octane is of the fuel your getting?  We have a couple stations down here that run a "monday only.....premium for the price of regular" sale.  Makes me wonder if its real, are they swithching the pumps to all regular and saying its premium, or are they really gonna not make any money just to sell?  Or, are we really getting the higher octane we are paying for at some stations?  Ok, I'm thinking too much now I'll hush....
