I can't decide which to go with auto or 4-speed with my 440 Challenger. I have never had a performance automatic with a stall torque converter.  I just want to cruise around town and jump on it every now and then. You know, burnouts fishtails, G-forces etc.  My brother in law is trying to get me to go automatic. Are they as much fun. It seems a lot of people are wanting to convert to 4-speed but not the other way. I realize automatic is better suited for drag racing. Is there any support out there for automatics other than drag racers?

You could go with the automatic and still have the best of both worlds. Here's how:

install a loose converter.  Install a reverse-manual valve body in the tranny.  That is my set up in the beast.  No clutch to mess with, but you still have quick launch capability and you must shift gears manually.  Just my 0.02.............Oldschool

Higher stall rpm than stock.  The higher the stall speed, the "looser" it is..........Oldschool

Well you know there better for straight lines so I guess it comes down to how you'll use the car?
If you like cruising and hardly get you foot into it, then a 4-Speed would be perfect for enjoying those great roads you have up there.
You could also look into a Gear Vendors OD unit. 6-Speed TorqueFlite-727 would be great fun, and up to 20% faster than stock!


I'm TorqueFlite-727 man through and through, manuals may be more "fun" to some people but I prefer the straight line stuff, after all, that is what these cars were made for...........corners? By rice.
There are many benefits to an Auto, they allow more torque to be generated off the line, no time wasted between gear changes and are always generally quicker in a straight line than a manual would be in the same car.

I have a automatic in my car, Man i tell you, when it's running right it will go side ways in 3rd all day long! If you dont plan on getting on it all the time, I would go with a automatic!

id do what old school said! thats what i have done with the 727 in the dart it has a manual valve body and a 2500 stall my cam is supposed to have a power range from 2500-6500 we will see!! ;-) lol

 That's kinda where I'm at with mine. I have a shift kit installed in the tranny. Wowsa!!! It kinda scared me at first, but man does it add some fun to the driving. It makes it feel like a stick almost.

So what shift kit did you end up getting Mike, from memory you went or were going to go with a Trans-Go TF-Stage 1 kit, correct?

 I did NZ,
   But they are adjustable. You don't have to drop the tranny to play with them. A little tightening of a screw-like-thingie, and you can make it shift harder, or softer.

I just looked NZ,
   My man charged me $84.95. The thing with shift kits is they are easier on the tranny, even though you would think otherwise. With my tranny stock, I was in third gear before I was at 10 MPH probably. I never could feel it shift. I guess it depends on how you like the feel of the shift. Not noticeable, or neck snapping(hee-hee). Basically, the shift kit delays the up-shift until you reach a certain RPM.

Hows yours under light acceleration? Does it still shift hard or is it bascially normal at crusing speeds?
Does it only shift HARD at full throttle is what I'm trying to say? lol

You have it right. If you are light on the gas, you notice a slight delay from first to second, but that's it. If you nail it... Oh brother, that is something else!!!!

By "slight delay" what do you mean exactly? Say, in normal street driving, does the transmission and shifts feel stock?
I'm wanting to buy one but don't want to be taking my Mum for a drive to dinner or something and cruising at 30mph the car is shifting like Big Daddy tunned it!! LMAO I f I knew if only banged through gears under full or performance throttle I'd but it!
