    Is this Charger R/T worth it

    I found this 71 Charger R/T he wants $4,500 for it with matching number engine and tranny. Tranny is still in car but 440 is out and sort of diisassembled but everything is there except raditor , headers, and exhaust manifolds but will throw in non matching ones. It was blue on blue with automatic on floor with power windows. Rust issues are the drivers front fender, battery tray, floor pans, trunk lid, and passenger quarter panels that someone did body work on. Has louvered hood with insert and the R/T doors. Also has a clear title and fender tag. Tell me whatt you think?

    Let me get this straight.  It's a U code R/T, with the original engine and transmission, minus a few engine parts, but comes with replacements, has the doors and the R/T taillights, with a consol shifter, and power windows, all for 4.5k?


    YES.  I'd say it's most definatly worth it.  Unless it has some really bad underlying rust issues, such as the frames are rotted to hell.

    DEFINITELY worth it!!! Not my taste in style that later year Chargers but still a great buy!!
    I wouldn't post it at the Charger board, someone over there may try and talk you out of it then hunt it down for themselves.

    Looks very interesting.  Don't see one of these everyday.  And with the power windows!  If you have the skills this would make a nice ride.

    Love the "for sale" sign on the side.  First time I saw a Charger with a Billboard on the side.  I though only 'Cudas had those!  LOL! 

    Get, it?  Billboard?  Oh, never mind....   (insert smiley walking away with shoulders shrugged...)

    Yeah, that's creative advertising alright. There probably weren't that many 71 R/T's, so that makes this tempting. As was mentioned, I would look at it REAL good for other rust issues.

    Well I went to look at the car and it has very tiny rust holes right underneath the wipermotor on the firewall. And some idiot on the passenger side wheel well tried to cut rust out then replaced with metal but didnt finish the whole thing. Looked like he was trying to cut out the whole rear wheel well. And the bulge hood has pin holes at the tip of the hood. And the block is on a engine stand and do match but tranny was still in car so I wasnt able to check if it was matching.

    How are you at body and engine work?  How adventurous are you?

    Are you going to do the body work yourself?  Do they make replacement quarters for this year car?  The rust holes under the wiper motor may be small hint of a big rust problem on the cowl area, possibly.  Should investigate more.  You did mention that the floor boards need work so that may be from water seepage from the cowl area.  Check under the dash on the backside of the cowl area.  Pull off the screens on top of the cowl and peek in side if possible.  I'm not too familiar with what is involved but I understand it's no walk in the park.

    As far as the engine goes, are you good at rebuilding engines?  Will you let someone else buid it up?  It sounds like you're being handed a box of engine parts and it can be a daunting task if unfamiliar. 

    If you have the skills, it could be lots of fun.  Wouldn't hurt to talk him down on the price, if possible.  Make sure the car is correctly coded for an R/T if you're not 100% sure.

    Yah!  Not a project for a lightweight (like me LOL) but definitely a rare-ish and cool-ish car.  A beast, to be sure, and hopefully the engine can be saved, right?  Don't know how tough sheetmetal will be to find...

    When it's done you could always sell it to Tim Wellborn!

    (see this months Mopar Action..... he's the guy with twenty-six 1971 Chargers..... yes, I think it's twenty-six...although my brain can't fathom such a concept...)

    Even in the condition described, I'd say it was worth it.  Just send it to a body shop if you can't do body work.  That's what I plan on doing.

    It looks like it'd be a good deal. :bigthumb:  I believe I know that area code, too.  I'm trying to remember just how much of the state uses that one. (the painted on number on the side of the car.)
