Hemi...but which
« on: November 28, 2005 - 07:27:28 AM »
Was talking to a freind about my 73 Cuda and he mentions a motor that his brother in law has sitting in a shed on a farm.Apparantly his father in law bought this brand new from Crysler around 1970 and never unwrapped it!He says its a Hemi and i ask him how he knows.Says the plugs are in the heads. Now what are the chances this might be a 426?Would Crysler have made any other Hemis around then, like older style ones?or for trucks? He said i could buy it for a few hundred bucks if i wanted to go get it.I wonder what kind of condition it is in after 35 years?

No reason to believe it couldn't be a 426... They were produced from 1964 on up and made more widely available after the street versions were introduced in '66.....  So, who knows, could be a "NOS" 426 hemi...... Now, wouldn't that be something...........

Run, do not walk, to the atm and grab all the twenties you can, and git on over thar, boy!

Unless it's some weirdo marine variant (?) which I don't know if Chrysler actually made, or were aftermarket things, but I've read about some types of hemis on race boats having some strange backwards distributor mount, or some such thing, I don't know...

Just look for some correct hemicuda engine bay pics on here, print out a couple, grab your cash, and get on over!  If it was me, I'd do a quick visual assess and grab that sucker, if you're talking a few hundred bucks.

You don't want it, will you pick it up for me?  :)

I do believe Chrysler made a few marine HEMI's.

Either way, you could score an NOS HEMI for a couple hundred?  WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!!!

I'd be jumping up and down and screaming my way to the atm machine!!!  I'm sure someone can tell you the codes that would be on the block to check.  That would be a heck of a "barn" find!!  Please let us know how it goes!

Sounds like a great find. Don't worry yourself about buying it though. It probably is nothing but unrepairable rust by now.  Let me know where it is and I will check it out for you!...LOL................................Oldschool
P.S. Is the distributor in the front or the back?

It's like Christmas in November!

Definately worth looking at.  Look at the casting #s.  According to this site I checked if we're talking  the 426 Hemi made from 1964-1971 it should have this casting #:

#2468330  1964-1971 426 Hemi

Check this website, http://www.thehemi.com/castings.php  I found it with a google search for "Hemi casting numbers".

Look at this page on how to ID the Hemi block.

Here's Year One's ID stuff:

Yeah, if they're rusty and crap.....if it's like the HEMI of which we are talking about "NOS" $200 for a 318 in that condition is correct IMO.  ::)

I personally know people who have either given away perfectly good running 318s, or junked them, because nobody wanted to buy them.  There really isn't much demand for them.  I wouldn't pay $200 for a 318.  If I had to buy a new engine, the smallest one I'd go for would be a 340.
