    I think I have fouled the plugs in my 440-6 Cuda?

    I was invited to bring my 70 440 six-pack Cuda to join in on a Thanksgiving day parade in Miami. I was like sure, I would love to do it. My car got raves, but the slow moving stopping and going for 3 miles in 80 degree temps I think fouled my plugs. At the end of the parade, my 440 was spitting and sputtering, and even blowing a little white smoke. Now the car is even hard to start.  :bricks1:
    Can someone tell me if thats what the problem is, I'm going to replace the plugs.

    white smoke is either running lean or burning coolant  :swear:. hope that it isnt the latter. check to see what the plugs look like and see how the carbs are adjusted.

    It's not your plugs. If you were pretty much idling along, I would look elsewhere unless the carbs. weren't setup right. How long were you doing this? If you have headers, I would suspect you had vapor lock from the heat. Do you mean it was hard to start even after it cooled down?

     :iagree: good point. lots of heat build up in there when idling.  could cause lean running could have damaged the plugs at that time too. heat will do that

    I went to start the car the day after, it was harder to start then normal. It also idels very bad, and seems way down on power. The car does have headers. I suspect it to be the plugs, I did have a simular running problem in the summer in 100 degree traffic, but it cleared up when I got moving again. The parade was hard on the old cars, two old mid 60's Vettes pulled out of it.

    OK, I'm just worried about the smoke. Is it still there? It doesn't smell sweet, does it? I want to rule out a head gasket problem.

    could be plugs too if the 6 pack is not adjusted correctly

    I'm going to try the changing out the plug, and see how she runs. Anybody of hand know the size plugs for a 440?

    Thanks for your help Mike. I only owned my Cuda  less than a year, so I'm still learning about how these six pack cars run. The guy I bought the car from said I should run the car with 100 octain fuel, but I don't have a place near by that sells it so I run only 93 octain. Do see that as a problem too?

    100 octane???  :wow:  The only reason to run that kind of gas would be if you had a high compression engine. Something in the 13:1 ratio range. I would think if your engine was built like that, you would really notice some knocking and pinging with 93 octane. Is that the case? In any event, this wouldn't have anything to do with your plugs fouling. Have you had a look at them yet? If they are all sooty, I would say your carbs. are running too rich.

    The car does have a loppy cam in it, and the compression I was told is 12:1. I will check the plugs tonight and replace them. I will try the Autolite 85's.

    Champ # is RJ12YC
     I had the same problem with a large cammed high comp 440 , idle it too much & the plugs would foul badly & quit firing altogether  , hopefully that will fix the problem

    Ok, I took one of the plugs out last night and it was very black. :faint:   Since it was late, and I didn't what to start changing all the plugs I desided to give the car an "Italian tune up". I got the car started, and drove it over to a back road near my home and did a few high rpm runs up and down the road. I pretty much run the $hit out of it.

    Shure enough it worked!  :bananasmi The car idled normal agian, and very little white smoke. I know now that the car is running lean, and needs some carb adjustment. The problem I have now is to find someone who knows how to tune a six pack car. Doing " Italian tune ups" are fun and easy for the most part.
