Honest opinions on this 1970 'Cuda's value
« on: November 29, 2005 - 04:50:15 PM »
A friend is looking to buy a nicely restored, 4 speed, 1970-71 Cuda or R/T Challenger and has asked me my opinion on a number of cars he has seen for sale.
He has searched across the country and has found some decent cars and some real perfumed pigs.
He recently found a 1970 Cuda, BS23 car.
Originally a 383, non air, ralley dash, bulge hood, 4 speed car.
Per the fender tag the car was originally painted F4 green with green interior.
The seller owns a bodyshop and has done bodywork for 35 plus years.
The seller had the entire car sandblasted, top, bottom, and inside.
The body was fairly solid but it did need both quarters replaced and a new front and rear valances.
The seller bought all the sheetmetal from Year One and installed the quarters himself.
He also bought new black interior panels, and seatcovers from Year One to replace the original green ones.
The seller painted and detailed the underside and front suspension.
New brightworks and weather-stripping all around.
Grill is perfect
New fuel tank.
Exhaust manifolds with TTI exhasut to new 'Cuda tips.
Engine compartment is nicely detailed to stock condition.
The car's build sheet is gone but the body stampings, VIN, and fender tag match.
The original 383 is long gone.
The car has a freshly rebuilt 440 sixpack engine that is stock. He has all the receipts.
The 4 speed is supposed to be an 18 spline Hemi piece and the car has a Dana 60 rear.
The car was repainted vitamin C orange and the paint and body look very nice.

To sum the car up, it's a nicely restored, turn key, original f4 green 383 4 speed 'Cuda that's had new quarters installed, new orange paint, and a 440 sixpack and trac pak drivetrain installed.
The seller told my buddy he has $47,500 invested in the car and is firm at his asking price of $50k
I'm sure you could put 47k in completely restoring a 'Cuda, especially if you bought all the restoration parts from Year One, but I don't think this particular car is worth that kind of money.
I know an original 1970 'Cuda is an extremely desirable car, and this car is ready to show or go but it still seems high for an original green, 383 'Cuda that's had re-pop quarters installed. :dunno:
My buddy is looking to buy a turn key car to drive, show and enjoy, not to flip, but he doesn't want to pay waaay over the car's value either.
He's not a Mopar expert, but has always wanted a nice 4 speed Mopar E-body.
He is going to drive 3 hours to look at the car in person and is SERIOUSLY considering paying $50k for the car.
The seller seems to be a very nice, honest guy and welcomes bringing body and paint guys to check the car over closely.
So what do you Plymouth E-body experts think?
What's this car worth?

I'm going to E-mail my buddy the link to this post and I've told him there are some real mopar experts here, so give him your honest opinions.

Thanks!

In my opinon without seeing the car in person. (you can have an 100 page list but seeing the car in person is totally different).  :icon16:

I'd say a car like that would be worth between $38,000-$45,000. Sure it's a 440-SIXPAK, but it' isn't a #'s car.
If it's a show condition car using date code correct parts I'd say the top end of my value.

:iagree:   Yes I am pretty much in agreement.    Does sound like a better than average car though.  However this opinion comes from a man who hasnt seen the car......  that being said if I were paying $50 grand for a car i would want a numbers matching ride.........  Spending this kind of money dictates the car being an investment........sure non numbers matching cars in good shape are investments too but for that kind of money its alot to pay for a car thats not the right color anywhere.

Pictures or not, that car is not, I repeat NOT worth $47 or 50k. If it was an honest to goodness 'U' code Cuda, it might be worth that price. damhik. :naughty:

440-4 barrel, of which only 334 4 speed Cudas were odered with (that makes this engine option more rare than the 'V' code or 440-6 barrel).

Top quality paint and body work do not come cheap. A nice #'s 383 4 speed Cuda with top quality paint/body is a $45k car today. So i'd say the 440-6 is offset with the fact it's a color change car and the 383 is gone. So that puts you at around 45k for that car if it's top quality. Just because he has 47,500 in it (so he says) does not mean he'll get that out of it.

I know i overpaid for my 70..but i got the fresh hemi (69 block), the 5 speed keisler setup, and the 4.10 Dana, and also the original #'s 383. My car is an original 383 Cuda, 4 speed, black car. I paid 64K for it to give you a perspective. The paint/body on my car is exceptional.

By the time I'm done with it...i bet i put another 5-6k in it, not including labor (I work for free!)
