    How difficult is it to remove and install a convertible top.

    I just orderd a new top for my 71 Challenger convertible in white with a glass rear window. Is it very hard to remove the old top and install the new. Or should I take it some where to be done.

    I decided not to ryr doing 4Cs top , if someone else can do it i`m sure it can be done But I would want to screw ti up  :misbehaving:

     Back in the 80's I used to install convertilbe tops in a upholstry shop that I worked for. Removal of the top is not difficult,installing one can be.Not that you could'nt do it yourself but to honest with you after 20 years on the side lines so to speak I would have my car sent out rather than doing it myself. If you do it yourself get a how to book to walk you through the install and rent a steamer

    the price of labor is a killer...check it out in your town and tell them u will bring your own top....see what they say...most won't pay 4 the top if they rip it...but if u allow them to install their own and they mess it up ,they will  pay 4 another one 4 you...see what i mean....it's like bringing your own parts for a tune up or repair to a shop...they will put it in but not warranty it...

    I would definitely take it to get it done.  I would go in and talk to the different places that would do it and just see what your options are.  That is what I did.  I went in and told them that I was going to order one through Year one and they said that they could order the same one directly from Legendary and it would be cheaper.  They went ahead and ordered it, removed the old one, painted the metal, and installed the new one.  By the way, while my car was there they re-stuffed my lower back seat to match my back-back seat. (if that makes sense)  If you be-friend them, they should treat you right.  Make SURE to have them give you an estimate first though so you don't get screwed.  Check around to the different uphoulstry shops but I found them all to be within 50-100 bucks of each other.  I gave my business to the one that was friendly, interested in my car, and knew to respect the car while in their shop.  That is my  :2cents:

    It only costs 350-400 dollars to get one installed and it is well worth it!

    Hay Gary, I took your advise and went Kenny's. He did a great job. Maybe you can tell me of a good body man, my Challenger needs a few touch ups .

    I need to get the door bushings replaced, the doors sag about 1/4". Also a very small rust spot, and some scratches. I would also like the car completly wet sanded and buffed.

    I wanted to bump this old thread up because it comes up in a Google Search.  I looked all over the place on how to do it and never found enough info on what to do.

    Here is how I installed my top, halfway down my page. Glass window cost me $100 on Ebay and the top cost me $200 from Year One on a %20 off sale day.
