Numbers motor value VS correct date coded
« on: December 04, 2005 - 03:19:49 PM »
Was reading the post on opinions on if dated coded motors are important if original motor is gone.  I didn't want to hijack that post.  Attached is a picture of a Cuda I have owned for about a year.  I got it with a non numbers 71 motor and a 70 auto tranny.  The car has a perfect buildsheet to document all the options, as well as the 2 original fendertags.  It is coded for Shaker, rallye cluster, roadlamps, billboards, leather, console cassette, roadlamps, fast ratio T/A steering, light group etc...  I have the car torn apart now redoing it.  Here is the twist.  About 4 weeks ago I got the numbers motor for the car.  Long story, but it was under the workbench of the previous owner since 1985.  So what happens to the value of this car with numbers motor vs not.  Doubt tranny will ever be found.  I know this is a loaded question and tough to answer.  A couple buddies put a higher number on the value due to numbers motor than I was thinking.  Anyone want to throw a dart?

Well it looks like it says 340 on that billboard, is that what is original to the car??  If its a HEMI car, I think the value would increase more than a small block.

Yes, 340, should have mentioned that.  And I already got the motor, not just that I know where it is.

You are one lucky Dude, how much did he charge you for the engine or was he scamming you for more money?I would think it would be worth 40% or more, guess it also depends on the options os the car which yours has plenty and more than most.Sounds like the Hemi Cuda vert Barrett of barrect jackson bought,he put out a bounty for the numbers engine for the car with Galen Govier, the engine turned up in england when a  guy called into the US to Galen to ask what the numbers meant, the guy was going to put it into a hot rod, then Barrett bought the numbers motor for his car, rebuilt it but kept his "play motor" in the car and bagged the orginal,Now thats a find!

IMHO I would think at least 10% more value to the car.

Exacxtly which is why I said 10% of the cars value. That's the difference it would make to me.

Appreciate all the input already guys.  I mentioned it was a long story.  The owner had a severe stroke probably 12 years ago, and basically communication with him is almost impossible.  His wife would kind of mediate.  I wrote them a letter on August 16th of this year following up on some things and asked if they had any idea on where the motor might have went.  I thought best case scenario he would remember selling it to a friend or something.  He had owned the car since 81.  He was not a numbers guy at all, had no idea of VIN stampings, broadcast sheet etc..  I was getting ready to purchase a fresh rebuilt date correct 340 when I thought you know what, I might as well follow up on that letter with a phone call.  Call her, yeah, he said it must be under his work bench.  I think he sincerely thought the motor that was in the car was the original one.  The passage of time and the severe stroke kinda threw him off I think.  I was down there a couple days later as a friend was going towards where he lives.  They are about 4 hours from me.  Pulled it out, sure enough, the numbers long block where he put it 20 years ago.  300 bucks and a handshake and we were back on the road.

Glad to see you got the correct motor for your Cuda. It will look great when your done. I figure around 10% - 15% value increase with the numbers matching motor but could be more on the car's options. I'm glad you found it and can put it back in your car where it belongs. I would jump at the chance to buy back my original block for my 70 Cuda but I figure it is a needle in a haystack trying to locate it. Just my 2 cents.
Jeff
