Headers vs manifolds

My stock 360 4bbl has a set of headers that seen better days. They are slung very low and therefore have several dents and I'm forever having to check them for tightness. I have to make the decision whether to look for a new set of headers or go back to stock manifolds. I like the thought of manifolds, you slap them on, torque them and never think about them again. I do plan on pulling the 360 at some time to rebuild and possibly installing a mild cam but keeping pretty much everything else stock. I'm looking for suggestions on sticking with headers and what brand or going back to manifolds?

Headers definately give you increased horsepower gains, if you plan on a nice daily driver manifolds will do just fine.  TTI has excellent headers, I currently Have Hooker comp headers on my chally and they do seem to be quite low as well.  For me there is no decision I will run headers all day long, as my motor is built pretty strong.

Headers will definitely give you more power, and if you got back to stock manifiolds, you will have to redo the exhaust pipes as they were probably cut off to fit the headers. It depends on your exhaust system and what kind of shape it's in... maybe you would replace everything from the engine on back???

I have stock manifolds on my '72 and always tinker with the thought of headers to open up the exhaust but I want to keep the car stock/stock looking.

Is there a prefered stock manifold you could use that has header like/better flow for the 360?  As stated by pink panther, for a daily driver the manifolds are nice but if you want to better reap the benefits of the cam upgrade the headers might be a more viable option.  Just my 2 cents.

TTi are expensive butyou get what you pay for , the fit is great , & they DO NOT habg below the steering so the ground clearance is great as well
 getting a set of Good production manifolds will be expensive also , they are difficult to find & were produced for the 340 from 68-71 only

Headers for sure!!! Headers = Breathing.  :bananasmi tti only way to go as mentioned above.  :thumbsup:

   Do you know what brand of headers you have now??? There MUST be a better set available to you. Even though I didn't spring for the big $$$ TTI headers, I have no problem with scraping or anything. I also don't have to tighten mine. Maybe you just got a bad set???  :dunno: Maybe the gaskets are crappy???  I have a set of crushable/ re-usable gaskets made by Percy that do the job well.

This was my understanding that the early exhaust manifolds were as good as headers! but as chryco pointed out they are difficult to find and very expensive!! Good Luck :thumbsup:

 :iagree: That is a good point, Headers over Manifolds are only going to gain hp if you have an aftermarket exhaust system set up.
Some people think headers = hp, in most cases true but some can do bugger all or gain nothing over manifolds without the proper set up.

What exhaust system will you be running?

Presently have a set of Hookers that run into Flowmasters. Not sure of the diameter of exhaust pipe, possibly 2".

You probably have 2 1/4". Regardless of headers or exhaust manifolds, you need to upgrade to a 2 1/2" complete exhaust system. I will be going with headers and a complete 3" system on my factory 6 pack Cuda.

sorry, didn't mention I run Hooker comp headers into flowmasters withs 3 "inch tunnels to let them roar!  It is about trial and error until you find what fits your needs, TTI does however make the best, on a dime thiough.
