painted grille in 73 'cuda
« on: December 10, 2005 - 08:24:34 AM »
Was searching the web for some 73 'cuda pics to help me decide what to do with mine. I came acrossed an original copy from the 73 dealers brochure, it stated that the 73 'cuda came with body colored grille and a black tail panel, and the the same was optional on the barracuda. My question is, is this true, and if so was the non painted parts an option on the 'cuda. My car was repainted and the guy said he had the tail panel painted black, and the grille is silver and appears never to have been painted. Any ideas...........

The only body color Cuda grilles I remember were optional on the 1971's.

The 72-74 Cuda grilles did have an orange insert though. Hopefully someone can post a pic of one here for you.

I've not seen a body colored grill on a '73.  I "restored" mine this summer and painted the grill silver "speckle" with Hugger orange inserts and gloss black grill bars.  It looks pretty good I think.

72 cudas were optioned for a color keyed grill , I have a friend who bought his new in 72 and has some pictures of it .I will try to get them to post. His grill has black painted insets insted of orange.Alot of 72 Barracuda/Cudas that I have seen at shows were argent with orange insets, or color keyed with black insets. Now as for the hood scoops it seems like 70-73 were black but 74 were orange.Im not sure what is correct. I painted my grill argent with orange insets and black hood scoops.

See , new to me! color keyed grilles!  I changed to the bigger pic of my front end, the scoop inserts were black on mine, that was when the car was new & bone stock! Rich.

As mentioned, they were available body color in certain colors in 72, but not in 73 and 74.

I'm glad someone asked that question, because I saw the same information somewhere and wondered the same thing.

I believe the tail panel should be painted a Flat black, not a shiny black , for a 'Cuda.  [?]

they called it "orangasol" black, (not sure of that spelling) & it was a flat or semi gloss type paint, a pain to keep lookin nice, specially if you got a little wax on it!  :banghead: Rich.

Didn't price it yet, need it for both cars! After going over 400 a gal for the paint, I need a break here on the little stuff!  :pullinghair: Rich.
I got a couple a spry bombs for the rally wheels, but also need to buy the gray for the bumper fillers & the speckle paint for the grille!
Maybe add yet another year to the completion time! :bricks1: Rich.

A friend of mine has a 73 340 Cuda that has a color keyed grill.  The next time I'm at his place, I'll get a picture and check the fender tag.  The looks to have original paint.

I painted my wife's grille to match on her '73. Some say that there's too much green, but it really looks good going down the road. I tucked in the bumpers, recessed the side marker lamps, added '71 style gills and a '71 gull wing style spoiler. My wife wanted the car to look a little more like my '71. She took first place at the Branson show and cruise in August. I had to settle for second.
