    Engine stalls out

        I hope someone can help me with this.   I start up the 340 and it runs great in park.   If I put it in reverse or drive, it dies.   I have to really rev it up to keep it from dying.   Any ideas?   The idle is fine,  the timing is set.  Thanks guys.

    Are you saying it stays running as long as you keep on the gas?

    thunk stop runing or sputter sputter stop running? really just from first thought is idle is to low or maybe vaccum leak??

     :iagree:   Does it have a bigger than stock cam?  Is the carb a Holley or Holley type?  If yes, check the power valves in the carb.  If the engine has backfired back thru the carb, that sometimes will fry the power valve.  Just a couple of ideas. :cooldancing:  ......Oldschool

     :iagree:  Yeah Oldschool, I want to think the carb. too, but we need some details here. Is this a recent problem? Has the car been sitting for ages? It could just be bad gas, or a crudded up fuel filter or carb. Weak or faulty fuel pump?

    We are definitelly stabbing in the dark without more info.  Maybe he will update us soon and we can get this taken care of for him...........Oldschool

    sorry guys didn't mean to be so broad..................newly rebuilt engine,  newly rebuilt 727,  bigger than stock cam.  600 edelbrock carb.     I just took it for a spin and could barely get it out of the driveway in reverse without giving it a ton of gas.    Drives around great but stutters and dies at the stopsigns.  I thought it was a vacuum leak but cannot seem to find one.    Thanks for the help  -Jake

       It sounds like the idle maybe too low. Have you tried playing with that?

    OK--I ran this by a couple of folks that deal with this stuff alot.  They agree that it could be a vacuum leak, but is most likely an improperly set-up carb.  Definitely sounds fixable with a little fiddling/adjusting.  :undercar: ..............let us know what's going on with this............Oldschool

    I just turned the idle way up, as soon as I put it in reverse is immediately dies.

    I tried replacing the gasket between the manifold and carb,  also checked the hose that goes to the brake master cylinder.   Where else can I check,  also what is a good way to tune my carb?   THanks

    that carb is to small for a 340. ..check the timing

     :iagree:  The carb needs to in the order of 750 cfm. A 340 with biggercams, etc can use it.  As far as tuning the carb goes, every engine flows differently and this means that a carb out of the box needs to be adjusted to meet that particular engines needs.  Holleys and Demons are noted for their tuneability.  Idle speed, air bleeds, float height, accelerator pump diaphragms/cams. Also squirter sizes, jets, and power valves. All of these can be adjusted to make an out of the box carb dial right in to your engines specific needs.  It takes some fiddling to get it right, but it's easy once you get the hang of it.
