440: 6pak vs 4 barrel
« on: December 13, 2005 - 09:04:31 PM »
As I build my 440 with Indy heads etc, my builder says more performance less trouble with 4 bbl than 6pak.  Is there just too much tingering and tuning on the 6pak to give up the show on the 6pak.  I really don't mind having a little trouble or less performance cause the 6pak sure looks good on the engine.

He says more performance with great 4 barrel carb.

If you are into max performance for the $$, go with the 4bbl. but if you want that "look" under the hood, nothing short of a dual quad hemi can compete with a Mopar 6 bbl setup.

I've owned a few 6 bbl cars, pretty easy to set up, and they run good and have a unique induction roar when the outboard carbs open up!

Not to mention the unique G force it places on the body when they kick in.    :woohoo: :burnout:

Does anyone have any actual 0-60mph times for a stock 440-4bbl vs the 440-SIXPAK?
I've always thought the 4bbl was the quicker of the 2 up to the 0-60mph then it's the 6bbl from there....... :dunno:

in a recent test the newer 4 bbls & intakes were equal to the dated 6 pack system , the 6 pack will work great but the cost is a lot more than a good 4bbl & intake
I have no troble tuning them but most people do

In one of the Mopar mags I get, they did a dyno test on 440s with a variety of intake carb combo's.  They wanted to see how the 6bbl stacked up against the "modern" intakes.  When all was said and done, the best 4bbl setup was marginally better ( like 5 or so HP & Torque ) than the 6 pak.  Not a bad showing for a 30+ year old system.  In fact it out performed all but I think one 4bbl combo.  At just under 2K for a complete setup, manifold, brackets, linkage, air cleaner, it's not a bad price for that kind of performance & WOW factor.  I have to side with Hemi71, when the outboards open up, there's nothing quite like it.

Thanx for all the replies, just picked up from 4 speed tranny and conversion parts kit this Wednesday morning. Man that pistol grip shifter is 1 bad mudda.

My "car" looks good: Challenger T/A floor mats, tranny & shifter, passenger chrome mirror, new quartz ralley clock, remote trunk release, and of course me sitting on the floor wishing Santa can get a Sleigh to deliver before Christmas THIS YEAR!!

I did get more positive 6pak feedback but I have decided to put a HEMI in the engine bay - I think. :sadwavey:

Now if you want to compare a hemi to a six pac car, I've had several of both. If you have comparable cars (same gearing, weight, trans) and comparable type motors (stock, cubic inch displacement, mildly modfiied) the 6 pack motor will get a jump on the hemi in a street race type contest ( 1/8 mile or less, stop lite to stop lite ). If you run a full quarter, as the traps approach, the hemi will begin making that top end rush they are known for, and drive right on by the 6 pac car. The hemi engines are known for top end HP, the 6 pac motors pull harder down lower in the RPM range.

Both of those engines have thier own unique sound...the 6 bbls have that cool induction roar as the outboard carbs open up, and the resultant tire smoke.  The hemis just have an awesome "mechanical" sound...and when the secondaries of those carters open up, you better be ready to hold on. I always thought the hemi gets that sound from those big rocker arms and the large valve covers, sort of an echo chamber. As far as underhood appeal, well like i said in an earlier post, only thing that beats the look of a Mopar 6 bbl setup is a dual quad hemi. I sometimes just go out in the barn with a beer and just stare at the hemi....LOL.

I would go with the six-pack because of the visual impact, but then again I'm predjudiced!!!
