Tuning motor for new rear end gearing...suggestions?
« on: December 18, 2005 - 08:53:21 PM »
Alrighty well i did break my 318, while it was down i changed my 2.76 out for a 3.91 surgrip. Shes runnin pretty good now, i just think there must be something that i should look at after swapping gears. I have a AVS carb, should i adjust the shooter/air door/or anything else to maybe release some more power?

still a tuning  :newbie: thanx

the timing can use a shorter curve , the air door cam be way lighter

it should need a smaller squirt with more gear , it is a less critical adjustment though

Ok thanks, ill try and tinker with it. Since the 2.76 to 3.91 swap its really not all that night and day as i expected. i mean it does take off and wind up a lot better...just seems like somethin is missing  :pullinghair: the ignition is up to par, timing is all in pretty quickly. so it makes me think that there is something i need to mess with on the carb, ive now moved the AVS to open sooner a full turn (clockwise) from where it was with the 2.76s...seems a little better but still not what i was expecting i guess.  :pullinghair:

Another quick question for ya. I saw in your tech archives write up that "make sure the dist vacuum hose is connected to the port 1/3of the way up the carb on the right side of the front of the carb "

Now on my carb i have the port on the drivers side (looking at it like this....)

Plugged and the vacuum advance is being ran off of the port on the passenger side of the motor. What changes between the two ports? Any type of performance gain? tanx

Vacuum advance helps with fuel economy, but for the most part it's better to cap that port. As far as the lack of performance in your opinion, your gearing is compatible with the cam, but your carb may be holding back the full potential.

That may be true on the carb. However i think it just needs some fine tuning...gotta take it over to warlock's (from moparts) house one of these days. He runs a Thermoquad on his 318 and he's got it runnin like a raped ape  :worshippy:lol: I'll  :undercar:

the Holley hooks up high up on the right side , the Carter / eddy hooks to the front but the 2 ports are different , 1 port icreases vacuum as RPM rises , this is the one to hook the dist to
the other works opposite & vacuum decreases with RPM , do not use this port for dist
