Both are good, but I was told the "X" configuration would be a little better. I guess because the exhaust wouldn't have a 90 degree bend to go through. Hence, easier flow to the other side.

The tests that have been done show the X pipe is better as the lines are smooth with no turns. I think is was mopar muscle that had a article awhile back on which would flow better.

Thanks for the responses. But wouldn't the exhaust flow better if the system did not have either pipe? What is the advantage of flowing to the other side? Is it because of the firing order (having 2 cylinders on the same side firing in a row "twice" (8+4), (5+7))????

well from what i understand is that with an x-pipe or h-pipe the exhaust mixes and creates an even flow of exhaust, where as if you have neither than one side could flow more than the other.

Crossover pipes even out the exhaust pulses in the pipes, making for a better "scavenge" effect in the exhaust system.

any back pressure at the mufflers has the option of taking the path of least resisitance , so yes pressure in the system is reduced , this increases Scavenging at the heads which is the biggest effect on cylinder filling

The stock exhaust for the 1970 440-6 did not have a crossover at all..did it? :dunno:

a stock 440+6 came with a H pipe system , X pipes are a recent incarnation / improvement on the old H pipes
