Slapstick T-Handle and Turn Signal Switch
« on: December 26, 2002 - 12:04:25 AM »
After giving the 72 Chally the once over and replacing a few lamps, I've figured out I need a Turn Signal Switch.  Also, the T-handle is missing for the slapstick which I need to replace before I shove the metal post through my hand.

Before I automatically order these items from Year One, I thought I'd see if there were anymore suggestions for places to purchase from or different parts available.

The turn signal switch should still be available from a local parts store , they used the same one for a long time ;)

You might want to check out this shifter handle:

AustinChallenger has a post under Cudas & Challengers Galore  titled  Gunslinger.  Some good pics of it installed.  I'm planning on getting one when my resto is a bit farther along.

I found a switch rebuild kit at NAPA.  Now, since I don't have a service manual yet, how do I get to the switch?  It's been a long time since I've seen this much metal on a steering column <g>.

Man, that pistol grip is sweet but I may wait on dropping that much cash on one until I'm further along, too.

Well I pulled the steering wheel today, and tried to rebuild the TS switch.  I don't think it had ever been replaced before, and the old plastic just kind of crumbled when I pulled the old cam off.  I got the new cam in, which works the turn signals, but now causes some weirdness with the hazards and the brake lights.

Oh well.  I was planning on rewiring most of the car after the body work and painting anyway.  Looks like a whole new switch assembly will be in order.

Best thing about today was I didn't think about work/my job once while fiddling with the car.  My therapy is working so far!

gizzard-1,

Thanks for looking, but I already got one from Year One when I ordered a service manual, engine book, restoration guide, and the hemi coloring book for the kids!

Only problem now is the T-handle wouldn't go all the way down on the shaft in park to engage the release mechanism.   :(  I guess I'll have to take the console apart to see if it has recessed itself for some reason.

One thing I DO need right now is the little chrome lever that engages the door lock on the interior drivers side.  Anyone know where I can find one of these?

My slapstick did the same thing.  I had to install it in neutral.  Make sure all the springs and such are aligned correctly inside the handle.  I saw those chrome locking levers on ebay.  I havent seen them anywhere else. I thnk it was like $50 for a pair.

I've got a locking lever on the way thanks to one of our own members here.   ;D

I tried installing the T handle in neutral and it would not go into park at all.  It was a nice day today so I ended up taking the family bike riding instead of working on the car.  I'm so glad Christmas vacation is about over so I get the house back to myself during the day when I'm not out working.

I am confused.  How many different types of shifter handles were used on 1972 Challengers?   The T-handle or the little ball shifter with knob on top?

The YO T-handle does not go all the way down on the shaft of the slapstik.  There is a round hole, and the bottom of the T-handle is too big to go through it.  Now, I just saw this on ebay:

Now here is the one I have:

Does this mean I just need to cut out the round hole to a rectangle and forget about it?

Well I'm about to go out back and the pull the rotary tool out...

This car is going to end up with so many different year parts in it, I don't figure cuttin' on what is here now is going to hurt anything!
