    Fuel mileage---Old truck-vs-new truck

     Good news so far concerning my new truck.   :woohoo:  It is a '05 ram 2500 with the Cummins.  The first tank of fuel got 18.5 mpg.  That is combination driving.  Compared to the 12.5 I was getting with my '97 5.2 l gas burner that is pretty good.  HHmmm--bigger truck and better mileage----what a deal.  It is supposed to get better mileage up to 10,000 miles and breaks in..  I'll keep ya posted.   :cooldancing:  .....Oldschool

    I would kill for 12 mpg.  My 2000 Ram 1500 4x4 gets 10-10.5 on a good day.  Its a 5.7, with 90,000 miles.  Is this normal,  Or do I have some major issues?  I just close my eyes when pumping it full every-other day.   My 05 Durango is getting about 16.5 with the 5.7 Hemi. (not being conservative with the gas pedal either!  :burnout: )  Is there something I can look for?  I found one problem the other day, the computer tire setting was at 245 but I have 285 sized tires on it.

     Cannibal---I also have a 2000 Durango with a 5.7--2 wheel drive.  It gets about 12.0 mpg most of the time.  :faint:  It has 106K on it.  Sounds like your truck being a little heavier and 4X4 is probably about right.  Computer managed fuel systems have come a long way recently.   :cooldancing:  .........Oldschool

    Thanks for the info.........at least I am not the only one getting that bad gas mileage.....as long as someone else is suffering along with me!!   :thumbsup:

    Love my 2000 CTD, I'll never go back to a gas engine pickup. We had a thread about fuel mileage and CTD's on here before, some people cant believe the mileage some of us get with these trucks.

    I` ve been looking around for a used truck but haven`t found many diesels yet but with the mileage difference I may keep on searching for one.Of course you lose some with the higher price of diesel,what is the the price difference now?

    In Georgia, right now it's about a quarter a gallon higher for diesel fuel.  But you know how that stuff changes.  It might be the other way around in 6 months.  I can go about 180 miles further on 30 gallons of fuel. At .25 per gallon, it's still cheaper to operate the diesel.   It costs $7.50 more for diesel in that 180 miles.  Bottom line is this: could I go 180 more miles for that $ 7.50 in the old truck.  The answer is no. Only about 35-40 miles.  :cooldancing:  ..............Oldschool

    i run diesels at work alot of the time (dump trucks and tractors), gotta love the torque. I have only driven a diesel pickup once and i liked it. But for now i'll stick with my 4.7 dakota that averages 16 to 17 (and having fun). Got 21.2 once this summer, that made me pretty happy.

    I`m glad you like the Cummins , I love mine & will never go back to gas , not only do you get more power & milage , the engine will live 700,000 miles or more with proper mainatinence so factor in the cost of 3 trucks compared to one to go that far   :burnout:

    I would love to have a cummins in a truck just like mine 2000.  Actually.....that would be Hemi71's truck!!  What to trade?!?  :grinyes:
