R/T with column shift?

    R/T with column shift?

    I have a 70 r/t, without fender tag. It is a 383 4-speed. The steering column, however, is for a column shift- it has the collar, and the linkage in the engine compartment is still connected. Does anyone else have this setup? Since I don't have a fender tag I cannot tell if the 4-speed was original equipment. Did r/t' s even come with column shifts? Was all floor sheet metal the same, and the humps for floor shifts added on the assembly line?
    It seems like a heck of a lot of work for a dealer to make the change, yet I can't figure out why the column shift parts are there. Any ideas?

    NZs R/T came with column shift, bucket seats and A/C which is a very rare combo, so I think yours probibly would have come with column shift.

    This car has buckets, 6-way seat. JS23NOE. Does it make sense they would leave the column shift mechanism in?

    Column shift was available with bucket seats or the bench seat in  all E-Body models regardless of engine.

    The hump for a 4/3 speed was just a factory modification of a floorpan to clear the trans linkage. Since you dont have a fender tag or broadcast sheet...you have to look at the floor pan and see if it looks factory or not. also check the ball on the frame rail for the Z-bar to see if that looks factory.

    You've got two possibilites...original 3/4 speed car with incorrect column, or original column auto converted to 4 speed.

    I once looked at a 71 Cuda, V code car with a column auto...passed on that car just for that reason...$5,500 in the late 80's...LOL

    Hang on, All 70 floor shift cars(E bodies) had a shift collar on the colum. The automatic cannot be pulled out of park unless the key is turned on and the 4spds must be left in reverse in order to get the key out.  Is this what you are talking about or is there actually a spot where the column shift lever used to reside in your columns shift collar?

    I almost bought a 70 Cuda with a automatic on the column but it was stored on a farmers extra farm and before I bought it someone went and stripped the car clean of everything they could take off in one night. It was ordered that way so the guy could put his rife between the seats as he had just came back from Vietnam and wanted to feel safe. I passed on a 70 AAR cuda for $4,500 in 1992 because the TA block had no numbers on it and I also sold a non numbers matching 70 440 6bbl Cuda in 1989 for $6,600 just because I had only paid $3,000 for it in 1987 and had a chance to more than double my money and thought I could just go pick up another when I wanted one.

    OK, so I now know the standard tranny on an r/t was a floor mounted 3-speed. Have any of you guys heard of a factory 4-speed car coming with a column shift steering column?

    Nope. It came with one or the other but not both. If you can post some photos we may be able to help you figure out what it came with originally.

      Please post some pics of your column and we can end this debate quickly. I think the floor shift auto and manual column will be the same but I am not positive.

    Maybe someone changed out the column....I dont think there is any way to tell if a column is the original one that the car came with from the factory!
