Racing style gas cap
« on: January 01, 2006 - 04:48:19 PM »
I know the gas cap has nothing to do with this, but every time I go to fill my car up I'm scared to death. My 70 Challenger has the racing style gas lid, and when the car gets full it won't shutoff the gas flow from the nozzle. Nothing like puking gas down the side of your car on to your R/T stripes. I try to listen for the gurgle when it starts to get full, but that can be very hard at a gas station with cars coming and going. I understand the inlet size for the tank is way bigger back then than now. Is this causing the problem? Also the nozzle from the pump is smaller now. Anyone else had this problem?

No. when I fill my 70 the gas pump shuts off when it get to the top. have you tried a different gas station ??
My 70 340 car was the same way. Never had a spill over.

Never had a problem with my car which has the regular style gas cap. I have filled my dad's car up a couple times and I never had a problem with it and its a flip-top.

 Sounds more like a nozzle shutdown problem more than a Gas cap style problem.  Try another station.   :ylsuper:    :cooldancing:   .....Oldschool

This works for me;

Turn the gas pump handle upside down, so that the hose points up instead of at the ground. It will not stay there, you will have to hold it, but it works for me on A and E bodies.

Best of luck,
Barry

That probably works, but I would feel like the biggest idiot holding the nozzle upsidedown....... :roflsmiley:

I can remember doing that same thing 20 some years ago on my 70 challenger conv. Either the shutoff would keep tripping or it would spill over.So, I would have to hold the nozzle upside down to fill.

Either way hold the fill hoze...............late last year we were headed to a show with the Chally and had stopped for a fill up, put the hose in and a guy came over to check out the car and bs, I flipped the lever for "auto fill/kick off", and walked around the car with him while talking. When the pump kicked off I guess the "force" of the shut off made the fill hoze flop out of the filler tube. I now have a nice paint chip where the nozzle hit  :pullinghair: My fault for not staying with it, and I have never used the auto lever before..........or SINCE ! !

I always hold the nozzle while fueling. I have not had the gas pump not shut off but a few years ago after filling up and parking I had the gas start leaking out of the cap. :banghead: :pullinghair: :stomp:  Unless I'm driving enough to burn out a few gallons after fillup, I stop a 3/4 and never fill up over 3/4 of a tank if the car will be sitting.

I've been told by mechanics that todays new formula gas (Ca. only?) does not store well and causes lots of problems with the carbs and f.i..
So if you're like me and don't put that many miles on your car, just put 10 gallons or so in more often so the gas
 stays " fresh".
