Reskining the roof...HELP
« on: January 02, 2006 - 12:08:02 PM »
Has anyone ever done this before.  My car has a butchered sunroof in tit that someone tried to fix (ie filled with bondo) The car has been sandblasted and I got a new roof for it which is at the sandblasters as we speak.  My plan, to drill out all the spot welds, on both roofs, clean up the undersides (under the roof braces) and reweld the good roof on my car.  Any tips or tricks???  Any help is appreciated.  Or maybe I should just go convertible...

I'm talking about the roof skin, the actual metal, not a vinyl top.  Interesting article though.

Pretty basic panel replacement. The only tip is to cut down a small chisel to fit in the drip channels to scrape out the seam sealer and separate the skin.

Thanks for the confidence boost torred, no seam sealer, the car has been sandblasted.

Here is one of the pictures from the attachment above. The roof skin has been removed. The only thing left was the pillars.

Wow, you went farther with yours than I would have on the roof.  I'm glad they didn't go that far, I'd be worried about having everything where it should be when they were done.  They only did the skin on mine and actually had bars welded across the door openings (as you can see in the pictures) and as far as blasting, careful not to warp that big piece of metal...I wouldn't blast it.

This is very doable and I already have another roof bought for my 70 R/T to do the same transplant when the time comes.

yeah, i am just reskinning it, like in the two pictures above.  I already had the roof blasted, the guy I use is very good, very careful.  All he does is blast collector cars, roofs, quarters, etc.  He doesn't warp them, at least he doesn't very often, I'm sure he makes the odd mistake.  However, 70Cuda raises a new question for me, do I need to brace across the door openings with just the roof skin removed.  I thought that by leaving the roofs skeleton intact the structural integrity of the car would not be an issue (the car also has frame connectors if that makes a difference.  Do you guys think I need to brace it?

You will lose very little strength if any with the skin removed.I didn`t bother bracing mine and everything fit with no problems.

yeah, thats what I thought torred, all the factory bracing underneath should be what gives the roof its strength in the first place and thats not going anywhere, just the skin.  Thanks for the input guys.

My cuda was actually braced across the doors because it was on a rotessiery but it never hurts to keep things braced up.

Just heard back from the sandblaster.  The new roof is done and ready to be picked up.  Found a bit of rust and a dent  but leaps and bounds better than trying to repair the mangled sunroof hole I have now.  Another question though.  The blaster said the metal on the roof was pretty "loose", meaning when you push down on it it flexes then pops back into shape.  He seemed to think a metal worker could tighten it back up again once it is back on the car.  Could it just be loose because it is not tied onto a car right now??? (It is cut right below the factory seams both front and rear, braces and all, the skin has not been removed yet)   Can metal get fatigued just from years sitting outside?  I'm hoping that it will stiffen up once installed on the car and hope I'm not being too optimistic.  How can you tighten up metal that is loose?  Did I just wast several hundred bucks on this thing?
