1994-1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Questions
« on: January 04, 2006 - 04:04:40 AM »

I am looking at buying one as a daily driver as they are easy to get down here.
I like the idea of having a "MoPar" daily driver for fishing, golf, surfing, mates etc.....

Only problem is I heard the (4000cc) 4.0-Litre engines in them were very unreliable.

 - Do any of you own one or have owned one? Any trouble?
 - Is this true? Do they pack up or conk out regularly? I have heard this from salesman them self when looking so this is not a good sign when your trying to buy a car off someone and they are saying DONT!  :eek7:

OR -  Am I better off investing a little more money and getting a 1998-99 4.7-Litre V8?

The 4L Jeeps only cost about $6,000 down here in good condition which is great.

Any help is much appreciated!!
Cheers,
NZ440R/T

ps: Something like the one below in black would be great!

IMO the 4.0L is a decent engine. They have been putting that engine in jeeps for a good few years now. My parents ran a service station growing up and we've serviced many over the years without any major problems that I can think of.  I'm not sure if you're going to find great fuel economy out of either engine though.  My good friend growing up owned about 3 different jeeps with 4.0L and he swore by them. I'm sure others will have more technical input, i'm just going on my experience with them.

My mom had one and it the 4.0 engine wasn't that bad. We even bought it wrecked and the engine nor the tranny was horrible. I don't mind them. I wouldn't mind buying a limited model with the leather seats and what not. Besides that those leather seats are plushy and I like them.

the 4 L engine is based on the 232 which AMC used in the 60s , while not the best for fuel efficiency they are very reliable

Really? So the 4.0 engine is a straight six? I haven't seen one, that's why I ask. A buddy of mine back in High School had an early 70's AMC Gremlin with the 232 in it. It was a straight six. We beat the tar out of that car.  It looked like a roller skate, but it ran.

Thanks everyone.

Sounds good.

Are there any particular years I should try and avoid? I'm loving the shape of the 1994 grill, more macho!  :ylsuper:

Also, do they have any get up and go or are they quite a slow turd? 180hp isn't a good sign.  :crying:

Yes the 4.0L is straight six as mentioned. The HO version in my moms jeep had 190hp and some nice torque. I know it had pretty good low end grunt for a jeep with 3.55s in it. Anyways, also to note that the picture is not a Grand Cherokee but, just a Cherokee.  :grinyes:

My 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee has treated me beautifully. Bought in early 99. I could not ask for a better vehicle. While I agree with Psycho as far as fuel economy, it is what's expected out of an SUV nowadays. From my own personal experience with mine from the last 7 years I would recommend em all day long. Just my opinion
Straight 6 in mine by the way.
I'd go for it if the mileage, and price is right.  Best of luck man which ever way you decide

4.0 is very reliable like everyone else has said.  I work at a junk yard and we don't sell hardly any 4.0s and my buddy that i work with has a jeep with a 4.0 and he beats that poor thing to death and hasn't done any mantiance and it still runs.  it probably has close to 7-8 thousand on the motor oil and 100k on the tranny fluid.  Also i've heard bad news about the 4.7s as they were a time bomb.  but i have no proof as we haven't bought any 4.7s and i haven't heard much about them.  thats just what i've heard about the 4.7s so dont' rip on me to bad
