I'm planning on it...someday. *SIGH*
« on: January 04, 2006 - 03:42:27 PM »
A friend of mine was driving, and saw a 70 Cuda sitting in someone's yard on blocks. He told me where it was, and I went to have a look. I knocked on the door, and introduced myself to the owner. I told him I just dropped by to talk shop, and take a look at his car. It's a red 1970 Cuda. It had 383 hockey stripe, but he said it had a 440 4bbl.  There was also 6 pack hood scoop installed, and not very well I might add.  it was sitting uncovered and up on blocks.  The body was in great shape. No rust on any of the panels, and only some light surface rust on the roof. The car had an auto tranny with a B&M shifter that he said did not work.  It was also partially tubbed.  The guy said that the car needed some engine work, and that it hadn't run for 2 years, although, the tags had 1997 stickers on them  :eek7:  I talked to him for a few minutes, and asked him if he was going to put it back on the road.  That's when I got the, "I'm planning on it...someday when I get some money".  By the looks of things, that's going to be quite some time. So, I left him my name and number, and told him that if he needed any help when he decided to start working on it, to give me a call.  I'll leave it there for now.  Once I get my garage up, and have more room, I may go back with some cash in hand, and see what I can do.  I'd hate to see that car just sit and rot into the ground.

You can probably bet that thing hasn't run since 97, he just didn't want to say out of embarrassment. Flashing some cash might get his attention. You would hate to see this same car sitting in the same place 5 years from now.  :banghead:

The weird thing to me is when they always say they need all this money to get it running.  It's not hard to work on these cars and certainly not hard to swap out engines and transmissions cheap.

Nowadays the hard part is coming up with the cash to buy one in the first place :ebay:

I wanted to buy the '71 in this pic, but the guy that owns it says he is selling it to another guy.  The other guy has paid him some money, but its been a couple of years and still hasn't been able to come up with all the money to buy it.  If he doesn't even have the money to buy it how does he think hes gonna fix it?  Meanwhile it just rusts away :stomp: :pullinghair:

Pitbull.
If I were you, I would already be over there with about 15k in my pocket. Any restorable 70 cuda would be worth that easy. He's probably had a ton of guys coming by thinking they're going to buy it for about 5k.
I had a guy stop by the dealership a few weeks ago and saw my 69 runner sitting out in the shop. He thought he was doing me a big favor by offering me 15k. After a couple of my bodymen started laughing, he realized that he had no clue what mopars were bringing.
I say go for it.

hot rod is right.  and i say he'd probably take ten.  there's a lot of people who hold onto vintage cars
and never do anything 'cause they can't afford it. in the case of a cuda fughettaboudit !!! you need
deeeeeeep pockets & total commitment. this guy has neither or the car would already be done or
at the very least better protected from further decay..

I would also go make him a offer and see if he takes it. Remember money talks and you may catch him when he really could use the cash and he may end up selling you the Cuda for less than it's really worth. Good luck!!!!!!!!!

For what it's worth, I've learned my lesson about procrastinating. I can't tell you how many times I've waited for the right moment to approach someone only to find out they sold it to someone else for less than expected.
I told a friend of mine about a running driving 69 runner for $2600 a couple of months ago and he waited about three weeks before calling the guy. Turns out the guy had just found out that he was selling it too cheap and raised the price considerably. My buddy's sick about it now.

If you really want the car you have to be on the dude all the time, and flash some cash so he knows you are serious. If he doesn't go for it right away. He will remember you holding that cash when he needs it. You might also remind him that the longer he lets the car sit and rust, the more money it's going to cost him to bring it back.

I'll try to slide back over there next week. My wife will kill me, but, what the hey, you only live once. If I can get this, I may have to sell my 2 74's that I was planning on merging, but it would be worth it.
