What gives with this cheesy exhaust ?

Was the exhaust through the rear valance an option or standard ? Why are the pipes so small on a 383 ?

Exhaust through the rear valance only came on certain packages. I don't think the exhaust on this car looks factory.

Might not be the factory exhaust size.  I think California emission cars came with turn down exhaust instead of tips out the back. Is this a real BS Cuda?

I'm not as familiar with 'Cudas but with the Challengers if you had a 340 and larger engine, you got the rear valance that had the cut outs.  If this is applicable to your car, this MIGHT mean you had a /6 or 318 originally.  Also I did remember a post a long ways back that said something about California cars, as 71340RT stated, having different exhaust.

I actually remember from Mopar Collector's Guide a 'Cuda came through with a /6!  Keep in mind that probably isn't the original exhaust. 

Who knows, unless you know the whole history of the car, a lot could happen in 35 years.

 383  2 barrel carburated cars came with a single exhaust - so they wouldn't have had the valance cutouts.

That is not stock exhaust, but I have heard rumors of dual exhaust cars that did not have the tips come through the valence, how true that is I'm not sure.

Barracudas came standard with turndown exhaust, you had to order the bright exhaust tips as an option. That would include dual exhaust cars, as an N code 383 would be. No bright tips, no thru the pan exhaust.

My car (318) originally had the one pipe coming out turned down on one side (passenger).  But it did have two cutouts on the bottom of the valence, where I put duals straight out below them.

I would love to put a rear valence with the rectangular cutouts in it.

Downturn dual exhaust was standard on california emission cars. Sales code was N95.

I have a factory N95, N96, N97 440+6 car. TropicalCats has a 383 R/T with the N95 CA emissions package. My car has the turned down duals without the valance cutout. This, to the best of my knowledge, was standard fare for 440+6 and Hemi cars equipped with the N95 CA emissions package. Anything other than that was able to have cutout exhaust, even with the N95 CA emissions package as evidenced by TropicalCats' R/T.

  With the so called retangle ( I speak of the vertical not the hortizontal ones intended for the dual tips) cut outs in the rear valence, I've never seen any where this was intended for exhaust pipes/tips, the 73 and 74 valance had these cut outs but that is where the rubber extension from the bumper pads went down, and actually this cut out area is directly behind the springs. Unless I'm confusing what is being asked here and shown, it may just be the incorrect valance for this model of car?
