A re-body is a car whose VIN plate, fender tag, and title are from a "donor" car, and the body with the numbers stamped in the radiator shroud and cowl do not match the VIN. IE...A totalled or rusted out 383 71 Challenger R/T was stripped of it's VIN plate, fender tag and maybe drivers door, then those pieces were put on a clean 318 71  Challenger and the 318 car was built to look like a 383 R/T. If you REALLY get into it, and you can save the radiator support and cowl from the R/T, you could graft those pieces onto the 318 car. The car would be titled as a 383 R/T.

As far as value of a 383 auto 71 R/T in true #1 national show condition...I'd venture at least 50-60K. It better be PERFECT, and be fully documented, and NO questions about it's heritage at all. To the right buyer, even more $$$ is possible.

Funny combination of questions has me   :dunno:

Can you elaborate?

Pierre,
A rebody is when someone takes the "numbers"... (dash VIN, radiator support #, and cowl #) of a highly valued, but wrecked or rusted out car, and transplants them onto a lower valued car.  :nono: As for your second question, we would need to know how rare it is(or isn't). Do you have any pictures you can share? Do you know the options it has? This might be a 40-50K car.

A rebody car is car that has had the VIN Plates and or Tag changed. A big no no and illegal. As for the value especially if its a rebody then I don't know.

no nessisarily illegal as long as the car is not represented as a real R/T car ,swapping serial #s is illegal but the whole dash pad can be swapped without the vin being distrubed , grey area for sure

No a rebody isnt necessarily illegal.    Like Chryco says, not if the car isnt sold as something it isnt.   Not if the man isnt selling this car as a true R/T.   Alot of people will buy a wrecked car and rebody it.   Some states issue special titles for this.   Its different than a title that is clean.   Some call these gray market cars.

Keep in mind that a car in #1 condition , really has ceased to be a car and is more an "object of Art" - ie - It is NOT driven, strictly trailered - driving a #1 car will relegate it to # 2 status.

A # 2 car will place or win in a regional show. Rarely driven.

A # 3 car is the majority of very nice drivers that would be seen at a show.  And will win a local show if a # 2 car isn't there.

I'm unclear about something after reading these posts. There seems to be conflicting replies about whether or not rebodying is illegal, sometimes illegal, uncertain. What's the deal? Anybody know the law for sure? If this a federal thing or might the law vary by state?

I don't know the law for sure in each state but I believe what most are concerned about . . . is that nasty little word . . . FRAUD.   The solution for this is another word that is not commonly used to often called . . . Disclosure.  As long as you properly disclose what you are selling and fraud isn't involved, you should have no problems.  JMO
