WOW.

How much was left of the parts car?

Great job. Kudos for keeping it alive, and progressing forward with great momentum. Looks like you are closing in on a complete car.

When I bought the parts car in early 2000 it was basically a rolling shell. No glass, but all the major sheetmetal was there (plus the shortblock 318 & tranny).
At this point the car is down to basically two pieces: the front suspension and the rear passenger area. Everything else that was in good condition has been used in the 71 R/T.

I still have the flat hood, fenders, doors & trunk lid that I should probably look at selling to help fund the rest of the project. I'm also pausing on the Challenger to finish the Polara and sell it (more project funds!).

Well, I've been working on the Polara since February, but for some reason I don't have any pictures to show for it.

I know, I know. I should be hung. I'll go right out tomorrow and get a few shots of what's going on.

Again, no real updates on the Challenger until the Polara is done and passed it's safety (but I might sneak out to do a bit of sandblasting on the Chally from time to time).

An update!!!  :wow:

My weekends are going to be pretty weird for the next few weeks (Wednesday-Thursday), so I actually have some time to myself.

Seeing how I haven't touched the Challenger in at least a few months I decided to start back in small steps, so I started with the rear valence. There are a few tears in the metal, plus a couple of holes, so I got to practise my welding skills again.

Here's the before product. I'm not sure if this is original for the car, but there is black paint underneath the red.

First two tears welded up, and grinding started.

Close-up of that section.

Cleaned up with the sander.

One favour I wanted to ask: can I get a couple of pictures of the valence mounted on the car? I'm interested in the amount of curvature across the bottom and the top of the valence (I'm pretty sure mine is off slightly.  :eek7: )

It's funny how fast time flies once you have a kid to look after...

Hard to believe that I haven't updated this in a year and a half. Not that I haven't touched the car (well, maybe only a few times), I guess life just got a bit too busy to check on old friends. Kid, changes in the job (lost our Nikon contract to the Dominicans), drop in pay, etc... Gonna put that behind me and get back to business! :)

So anyways, the last post was about the rear valence and what I was doing to it. Here's the rest of the pics from then (Nov 2007). I also noticed that some of the picture links were broken on the last 2 pages, so did a bit of fixing up on them.

Other side of the valance getting cleaned up and smoothed down.

Let's play around a bit with primer and paint to see what it looks like.

And the other side, too.

There's something about seeing fresh new paint on metal that just puts you into a good mood, doesn't it? Anyhoo, I needed to check a few places in the passenger floorboard to see if there were pinholes. Out comes the sandblaster!

Wide angle shot of that side

The main area that I was concerned about

Figured as much, the pitting was way too deep. I'll need to replaced a section of this floor, too.

Lastly, just a shot of the front bottom section of the door frame (just a small pin hole to weld closed here)

Not sure why I didn't get those up right after that posting, but I guess I had a good reason. That brings us up to this weekend. I finally got myself out to the garage and did a bit of work on the old gal. First off, section out the part that needs replacing.

The normal work of boxboard templates and fitting to new metal.

Fitting the new piece into place (still needs trimming at the front edge before tacking it down).

My plan (and it's a rough one!) is to spend just a couple hours a week out in the garage when I can tear myself away from the other responsibilities around the house. And of course I'll be posting pics of the work when it's done.  :picture:

It's good to be back!  :drunk:

Incredible resurection.  You'll have a great one when finished.  I like that you're not just running out and buying repop stuff like on TV but making patches and fabricating from donor stuff.  Old school!

Well, I did buy certain patches. The trunk floor, trunk extensions, inner and outer lower quarter sections were bought at Andy's Musclecars. The majority of the floor, backseat and drivers rear subframe were pulled from a parts car. Looks like most things from here out will be fabbed from scratch.

So far it looks like my new plan is working. I've spent a bit less than 2 hours in the garage since Sunday, but I actually have some work to show for it!

Got the patch trimmed a bit more and tacked into place.

Just working my way around the edge now, trying to avoid warping and burn-throughs.

I've still got another small section to the right that'll need to be cut out, and patched up - that'll probably be Sundays line-up.

It's awesome when a plan works the way it should.  :woohoo:

Got to spend a few hours in the garage today. I think I'm pretty much finished up in the passenger floor area. Here's pics of the progress

Replaced another swiss-cheese area

Grinding!

There are two new patches in this pic - I wasn't happy with the way the one section looked, and the area between the two patches was so thin that I was blowing through it with the welder. Out it came!

More grinding! :)

So with that done I've got a few directions I can go in. First would be to stay at the front of the car and work my way around the windshield area (which I got a head start on a year and a bit ago). Here's an idea of what they look like.

The second option is to head back to the filler panel and sort it out, but it looks like I may need to order that whole panel to do the work. Here's what it currently looks like.

The third option is at the back of the car, where the trunk floor mates up to the rear panel. I'll need to fab a new section for this, and possibly an inch along the bottom of the rear panel.

I'm leaning towards the third option. Once I get the back of the car tied together again I can get it back onto the rotisserie for easier access to some areas for welding and media-blasting.

Stay tuned for the fun!

Hey SC73! It's good to be back!  ;) I didn't realize how much I missed this place until I came back...

I'm hoping to have a lot more progress on the project now, just a matter of getting out to the garage for just a couple hours every few days or so. :)

Good to know you didn't give up!    Great progress. It's all worth it After years of grinding and modifying mines finally painted. Now if I can just get it reassembled

Got started on the rear panel tonight. Nothing too in-depth (since it's too late to be running power tools).

Another look at the rear area that needs work.

Small section I've removed so far.

Up close and personal with the rusties!
