What's the correct steering wheel for a 71 R/T Challenger?
« on: January 11, 2006 - 07:15:44 PM »
I'm trying to figure out what's the correct steering wheel for a 1971 R/T Challenger.
The wife's R/T Challenger has the wheel with 2 aluminum spokes with holes drilled in them that's found on the 72-74 E-bodies.
My 71 R/T has the plastic covered three spoke wheel with the woodgrain on the rim that I see on most of the 70 E-bodies.
Which one is correct or could they both be found on the 71 Challengers?
Could the 71 Challengers have come originally with the Tuff Wheel?

Thanks.

I'm kinda scratching my head, :dunno:
The 2 spoke wheel in the wife's R/T Challenger looks to be the original and I've seen the same wheel in some so called original 71 E-bodies...but the 3 spoke woodgrain in my R/T also looks to be the original one and I've seen these also in 71 E-bodies.
If different steering wheels were offered would it be on the build sheet??

I'm partial to the tuff Wheel myself.

Tuff wheels were not available on the E body.  Standard wheel would have been the 3 spoke woodgrain.  Coupe had the 3 spoke black textured wheel standard.

71 Challenger Coupes came standard with a black polypropylene coachman grain three spoke wheel with a padded horn button.  Standard on all others was a woodgrained 3 spoke wheel with padded horn button. The ONLY option was on the R/T you could get a Tuff Wheel (code S84) which is also a 3 spoke. Not sure what the 2 spoke wheel is. :dunno:

Here's a 2 spoke school bus wheel on a supposedly original 71 R/T Challenger currently on E-bay.

I thought the 2-spoke was introduced in 1972-73?
Padded 3-spoke was base, then the rimblow and a MoPar parts store could hook you up with a Tuff wheel.

That's what I've seen/been told.

Well I just checked the build sheet on my R/T and it's coded S81 which is correct for the 3 spoke woodgrain wheel that's currently in the car, the wife's R/T's buildsheet is MIA which is too bad as I would love to see what wheel it's coded for. I know the 2 spoke wheel in it has been there for a LONG time :dunno:

Do you have a different part book?

I was going by the S codes at the bottom of this list.
My build sheet has 81 in the S row.

According to the 1971 Challenger illustrated facts and features manual there were two steering wheels available.
The Black poly-propylene in textured coachman grain, three spokes with padded horn button was standard on the Challenger Coupe.
The 3 spoke, simulated wood grain, with padded horn button was standrad on the Challenger and Challenger R/T.
One interesting thing that I have noticed in the Challenger sales brochure is a picture of the steering wheel with a rallye dash that is definitley from a Cuda as the horn button has a fish on it. Oops do you think a little mix up in the advertising department.
