Mild 383 build-up

 I ran across this article in a Car Craft magazine about a 383 Mopar build-up.  It's really bolt ons and a cam. Made some good power.  Seemed like the kind of info a lot of folks would be interested in. Maybe a pretty common build. Here are the details:

Bone stock 383--stock-bore
K-B hypereutectic replacement pistons--9.0 to 1 compression   Pump gas special.
Unmodified  906 heads
Comp XE285 HL Cam  285/297* gross duration  or  241/247* @ 0.050
The lift is 0.581 intake and exhaust with 1.6:1 rockers---hydraulic lifters
Mopar Performance  M-1 intake
Demon 750 cfm carb
1 7/8 headers

This combo produced the following Horsepower and Torque

Horsepower peak is  455.7 @ 5800 rpm
Torque peak is 457.4 @ 4900 rpm

Hey just think, when you add a good set of ported heads, your up to 500 HP!!!!!!!

Great buildup, but that is a lot of cam for a 383...especially one with stock heads. Im with todd....it needs ported heads.

For a wee-83 spun to 6000 the actual "stock" port window would be sufficient, but those 906 bowls always respond well to some work with remarkable gains, even with the stock 2.08 valve.
The 241/247 cam needs some convertor/gear to get "in it's groove" on 83's which are inherently poor 'outa the hole, due, to the the very thing that makes 'em such great revvers, that being the short stroke @ 3.38".

I'm Curious here as to the same basic build, but utilizing the larger bore 400, with better dimensions, and substituting the later 452 head style ports, I'll guess closer to 490/480 for the same $$.

anyone know (1) what the power gain with just the M1 intake would be (2) will the M1 fit under the flat hood?

there are 2 M1 intakes , single & dual plane & what are you swapping from / removing from the engine ?
the dual Plane M1 is basically the stock 69 intake cast in Alum so little if any gain other than weight will be seen but it easily fits under the stock hood , the M1 single plane is totally different it will fit under a bulge hood with a drop base air cleaner but i sdesigned to work in a 2800 up powerband

removing the factory intake. just not replacing the hood yet. im not interested if it is only a weight thing.

what is the best intake for a 383 with the flat hood and factory heads for the most power gain just intake wise, remember as always, i am poor, but can save little by little for parts.
