R/T-what makes it so
« on: January 16, 2006 - 11:14:54 AM »
Challenger R/T's  had unique options which made them so. I am trying to make a list as to what they had. So far:
blacked out grill
R/T badges
Rallye gauges
wood steering wheel?
383, 440 or hemi only (no small blocks)
vinyl and no vinyl roof
SE option avvailable.
R/T stripe, bumble bee stripe, hood decal or stripe delete
 R/T hood
71-had side gills/scoops on 1/4 panel
72+ avalable front fender scoops
Rallye rims or magnum
heavy duty suspension
dual exhaust out of valance
anything els????
Anything else???

In 71 you could have at a cost above standard 383 engine a 340-4bbl. engine Also chrome exhaust tips were standard on the RT.

This is what I can think of as "standard" features on all R/Ts, none of them are really unique to an R/T....you could add most of them to a non-R/T.

Rallye Hood
Rallye Dash
Rear valance with exhaust cutouts
Front sway bars
Bigger torsion bars (according to engine size)
Stiffer leaf springs
Bigger standard brakes
Some sort of R/T badging or stripe
Of course a big block
71s had the rear fender scoops

No R/T's after '71, just Rallye's.

Wasn't aware that all R/T's had Rallye dashes. It's an option on Cudas, not standard.

California R/T's had exhaust turn downs.  Tips were not allowed.  While most R/T's had a black grille, I know of 2 unrestored 70 R/T's, both Sherwood Green with the argent silver grille.  I don't know why Mopar did this with this color.  Also who knows if it was a rule for this color or something that just happened.
Chryslers sales literature says the R/T had a 383 standard engine, Rallye instrument Cluster (which includes 3 speed wipers and wiper washers).  F70x14 black sidewall tires with raised white letters, longitudinal tape stripe or bumblebee stripe (optional at no extra cost).  HD torsion bars, sway bar and HD rear springs w/ the 383.  With the 440, 426, and 340 an XHD Handing package was standard.  It included sway bar HD springs and shocks. "In addition as a separate option  HD shocks are also available with standard and Rallye suspension."  I took this straight from the sales lit.  It is a little unclear.

Hrm, you might be onto something. My car originally came with the argent grille and I always figured it was because it was an SE (even though Ive seen other R/T SEs with the black grille) However, my car was originally F8 green....so that makes 3 green R/Ts that had the argent grille. Wonder if anyone knows the answer....

So..is that why one of my original Ca. car fender tag code#'s is dual exhaust- no tips?

I am sure I saw in some Chrysler literature N/A California on the tips.  I am going to look for that quote.  I have been wrong before.  I did look a little and have found that it looks as if dual exhaust was standard on the R/T and tips were an option.  That alone would explain why some R/T's had tips and others did not.  It might also be the reason tips, or lack there of, were on the fender tag.
