Thoughts On This Exhaust?
« on: January 16, 2006 - 11:45:40 AM »
What do you folks think. Okay on my 71 Challenger my setup is running 2.5" piping off the manifolds all the way into an H-Pipe and then it's straight piped all the way back to the resonators on the back. I have no mufflers and was wondering if no mufflers would hurt my performance?

that is the way I have run mine for ever , less back pressure & better sound , it should perform worse with mufflers

Thanks Chryco. I know on some apps not having any mufflers can hurt performance in certain cases. Personally, the car isn't loud without mufflers running through the manifolds and resonators. I'm kind of suprised. Anyways, thanks again CP.

Are u talkin about the mufflers under the trunk?? because they are the mufflers, the ones under the car are the resonators.

 :-[  Now I'm confused.

I thought the ones under the trunk were resonators and the ones under the rear seat were the mufflers?  ???

If we're talking the factory style exhaust, the mufflers have the typical "S" path and the resonators are straight through design, aren't they?   ???

Too little back pressure MAY hurt low end torque but will gain breathability and high end HP.  Has to do with scavenging the exhaust, exhaust pulses, etc...  This may have more to do with diameter of the pipes more.

On one of my cars I played around switching a Thrush Cherry Bomb (straight through) with a turbo muffler and the turbo muffler had better low end pull.  Just my 2 cents.  :)

1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

I think the resonators aren't straight through, of course I could be wrong and yes they are the muffler like things that the exhaust tips attach too.

Yes, the round canister things that the tips are attached to are the MUFFLERS!!!!  and they are very RESTRICTIVE!!!! sound good but suck. Do u realise that a stock exahust on a e body will cost about 65 horse power! this happened when a friend of mine was dynoing his stock hemi with the full exhaust hooked up.

The resonators are the oval shaped units under the rear seat and YES they were straight through. The mufflers were at the back on either side of the gas tank.

Thanks for all the repiles. Sorry, to be a little late to reply so, the stock mufflers are that restrictive huh? Anyone know for a fact besides todd383? If they are bad restrictive, then should I run straight pipe in that area, run these mufflers:  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MagnaFlow-Muffler-14416-4-Round-14-Body-2-5-C-C_W0QQitemZ8034692927QQcategoryZ33636QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And then get an X-Pipe?

I had a muffler shop set my '68 Dart with a 2 1/4" exhaust with a x pipe and flowmaster muffers from the factory manifolds.  The only other thing I did to the stock 318 was put on an eddy performer intake with a 600 cfm eddy carb.  Actually I did the exhaust after the carb and intake.  Car felt pretty stout after the exhaust upgrade.  Muffler guy cussed at me a lot thought.  It was a 4 speed car.

Thank you. Anyone with thoughts on this? Would I see any decent mileage improvements?

My mileage actually went up after I got rid of the single exhaust and went to the new set up.  Like 2 - 3 mpg.
