Hemi Challenger convertible rebody alert
« on: January 22, 2006 - 05:54:04 PM »

Hi E-body people

Not sure if anyone really cares but there can't be too many Hemi Challenger convertibles around so perhaps someone knows this car. In the early 80's my unscrupulous step brother had a '70 Challenger convertible and bought the numbers (dash pad and I think the fender tags too) for a Hemi convertible Challenger that was wrecked. I didn't really think much of it at the time since he "rebodied" Challengers/Cudas all the time and sold them (I didn't know it was illegal in some states)

Car would have came from Florida in the late 80's early 90's. I suspect it was unfinished/disassembled with a non-numbers matching Hemi. Car was black and I believe was optioned with a shaker.

If the car is still around it's probably worth a fortune and thought I'd share. If you need more info PM me although I usually drop in here only on occasion...I'm usually over at Dodgecharger.com. After all, the Charger is MOPAR's only REAL Muscle car   ;)

Easy now. easy now guys, he had a wink on the end of his post.   He was teasing.  I appreciate the heads up.   Any shaker Challenger thats legit would have to also be an early early build date, as they were judged to be a safety hazard due to the construction of the hood, not like the Cudas.

My shaker car was built April 15, 1970, serial 308705. Pretty late in the model year.

Early or late for 1970 Challengers with the shaker. The later ones have the "crumple zones" built into the under skin.

AK, if you have the VIN for it can you let me know?

T/Ake care,
Barry

Yes the shaker hoods were only available in the first few months and the last few months of production. It seems that in the crash test the hood ended up going through the windshield and de-capatating the driver. OUCH !!!The Cuda's didn't seem to have the problem because of the front header panel.

Today that would lead to a Congressional investigation and mass public outrage at the "irresponsible american car manufacturers". Back then... well, they just took the shaker off the option list. My, my - how times have changed.

Bah.  A bodies >  All other Mopar!  Why?  Light weight.  Less mass to move = faster 1/4 time.  :P
