Need help decoding fender tag on 1970 Challenger
« on: January 25, 2006 - 11:15:30 AM »
Hello,
I am new to the forum. I am in the process of buying a 70 Challenger like the one I had back in High School in 1977 so I am lost! Can someone decode the fender tag for me?
Thanks,

Thanks for the quick reply, how can I tell if this was a factory RT/SE?

Is this car supposed to be a 383 Magnum?

Thanks SCF!  My son is currently attending UGA, so I'm slowly getting to know that area.

The JS29NOB means that it is a 383 magnum RT/SE...just like ours.  You say you are currently in the process?  I'd bring her home as soon as possible!!  What kind of shape is she in?

I just stumbles across it, its pretty orig except orig motor gone...has orig trans/rear tho......Pretty nice mild resto done appears about 5-7 yrs ago. Price is right too!I will post pics when deal is final. My orig was a 1970 RT/SE white with black interior and blk vinyl roof that I bought for a 1,000 in 1977 and sold for same 2 years later........wanted it back ever since.

Cigar lighter would not be on tag.  Most likely J45 Or J 54.  1X should be V1X since all SE's had a vinyl roof.  1 is most likely M21.  R code is also incorrect. V code should be either 6 or 8.

Yes it should have a vinyl roof, does not have currently.so how do those codes breakdown and what do they stand for?

Al SE had special vinyl top with smaller back window.   I am confused as to what model code they use for regular R/T if this model code means SE.    I would have thought the SE package would have been a code and then things like the headliner / storage and such things would not be separately listed as options on the data plate since they were included on all SE but most of those things could be ordered separately without the SE package (such as the special headliner or small formal back window)  At least that is how I remember the coding.   I found a purported Red / Black SE i n  Orlando but was also wondering if it is a real SE.     Thank you

J = Challenger
S = R/T
29 = SE

A regular R/T would be JS23

Oh, a JS27 is an R/T convertible...
