Carb recommendations for 440

I'm needing to buy a carb for my 440 soon here, since I feel a bigger carb is in order.

the engine is a 10.5:1 compression engine with a .545 lift cam. HP manifolds (headers dont fit the car worth a crap) i had a 3310 holley (750) on it and think a 850 or so would be better suited to the engine.

i was looking at the speed demon 850 carb, and also the 870 holley street avenger.

any of you guys have either a better recommendation or feel one is a better carb than the other?

you had or have a 3310 on it, what is on there now ?

buy some TTI headers    search for TTI   the people here love them.

the last headers i tried on this car didnt fit worth a crap, baked the starter, and boiled the power steering fluid out of the sector. those were 200 dollar headers. somehow i cant see 500 dollar headers fitting much better.

had the 3310 on it, now the engines back out of the car till hopefully end of next month.

Personal favourite, a 4150 HP series Holley, yep, just a regular downleg booster type, any size, mech sec. If you're automatic car, Get enough convertor.

The TTI headers make a world of difference as far as fit goes.  I have a small block, but there are plenty of people here who have the TTIs on their big blocks.

the 15-20 extra horsepower from the tti headers isnt justified in the price if you ask me. so i'm sticking with my hp manifolds.

I dont blame you Moparman.   Thats alot of money to spend for the HP.   I have always heard the stock HP manifolds are better than the non HP manifolds and the flow is pretty good.   If your gonna show the car or have the occasional weekend driver headers are a hassle in a number of ways.   Not to mention $750 plus for headers is alot of money.   Thats just my opinion.

In my opinion I would stick with stock manifolds unless your willing to buy good headers i.e. TTIs.  I just bought the new Holley Street HP 750 which is alot less than the 4150HP but haven't tried it yet.

there are a lot of choices , 850 CFM is approx correct but do you want a choke or not , Vacuum secondary or double pumper, annular or downleg booster , both Holley & Demon offer carbs with the previous choices

whats the duration on the cam? and what is your gearing? 850dp is a big fuel dumping carb..

I bought the tti headers and in my opinion was the best money spent on the car so far (it only hurts the wallet for a while), they fit great, havent cooked my starter or boiled powersteering fluid or melted plug wires off. The even work well with the eddlebroke <----  :lol: head. And the only carb I will ever buy is the DEMON, 4 corner idle, glass site hole for fuel, better looks and out of the box performance. I started with a holley 750 and made the jump to the 850 demon (might be for sale  due to moving to a pair of 750 demons), they seem easy to set for a non mechanically inclined fella like me.

I know TTI's are supposed to be the best, but I couldn't stomach the price either.  I went with Hedman Elite's with ceramic coating.  Fit and finish are excellent and way cheaper than the TTI's.

I was running a 750 Carter/Edelbrock AFB on my 440 with Edelbrock RPM intake, mild duration cam, stock heads and headers.  It ran a little rich, but had good throttle response and returned decent mpg.  I haven't tried it yet with the new alum. Edelbrock heads and more radical cam recently installed in the engine rebuild.

If I replace carbs, I'm looking at the 800 cfm Edelbrock Thunder Series AVS (familiarity) or the Speed Demon 750 cfm with vacuum secondaries and elec. choke.  I've heard good things of both.

850 demon (might be for sale  due to moving to a pair of 750 demons),

Been thinking about an 850 demon, PM me with details if you are going to sell it.

If the car is primarilly used for the street, stick with a 750cfm carb. An 850 will give you an edge at the track but on the street your mpg and throttle response will suffer.

as usual I will disagree , I consistantly see 60 Hp gains going from an 850 up to a 1050 on a relatively mild race engines & feel you need 850 for a street engine
