X-Pipe verses H-Pipe?
« on: January 27, 2006 - 11:30:19 AM »
Hi,

Car is ready for a new exhaust.  I plan on going with an aluminzed 2 1/2" system for my 70 Cuda (440 with Headers).  Can sometime tell me what the difference is between H-Pipes and X-Pipes as far as which is better.  Also, is there a good source for these.  I would like to install my own.

Appreciate it.

Jerry

Read an article in a Mustang mag where they did a test X-pipe versus H-pipe and if I got it right the X-pipe gave 20 percent moore power than the H-pipe, at least on that particular car.

X-pipes are far better, I have never seen a test where an H-pipe outperformed an X-pipe. As for companies that make them.....Magnaflow makes an x-pipe exhaust system, but it really isnt a bolt in type deal. I think you best bet for a bolt-in installation is Tube Technologies (TTI)

TTI did a test of h-pipes vs. x-pipes, and the test showed that, in cars that develop around 400horsepower, a gain of 12 to 15 horsepower is realized at the rear wheels when using the x-pipe system. Cost-wise, the x-pipes for a Challenger are $ 54.00 more than for an h-pipe exhaust system, whole set-up is $ 581.00 for an h-pipe system, $ 635.00 for an x-pipe ( I know, I just talked to TTI yesterday about a system for my Challenger .) Anyway, $ 54.00 seems a small price to pay for the extra horsepower. These systems are well worth the price, though. Very simple and easy to install, at least it was when I put a TTI exhaust on my '71 Charger RT.

70RTdroptop,

Thanks for the info.  I need to do this through mail order so I just want to be sure of the little things.  Which kit were you considering for your Challenger.  Headers and through the rear valance?

Thanks.

Do the x-pipes sound different than h-pipe exhaust?

MR291- I'm going to stay with the original exhaust manifolds for a more stock look, but I will be using the through-the-valance pipes. TTi wants mucho $ for the 2 1/2" exhaust tips, though - $ 398 for the set. Probably best to shop around for those.

I heard that the X-Pipe is somewhat mellow compared to the H-Pipe.
I went with the tti set up and it sounds loud enough for me, nice growl with the classic MoPar muscle rumble.

As for price, they aren't cheap but you know the saying, do it once, do it right....you pay for what you get.

the X pipes seem to remove the side to side effect & mellow the sound a little

I was wondering the same thing about sound for a 70 challenger after reseaching all the options, I went with the cheaper TTI H-pipe system, can't be happier, it all fits really well, and tucks up nice and sounds great....I was worried about the cost, but it was well worth it compared with others. TTI Rules, Great packaging and went together without too much trouble.........
