Front tire/rim size

What is the widest rim/tire size you are running or have seen on a Challenger?  I found a really good deal on some rims, but the guy wants to sell all four together.  The fronts are 9" wide, the rears are 10".  I plan on mini-tubbing the rear anyways, so that should not be a problem.  They are 18" rims.  Any ideas?

I run 254/60's on 15x7" rim with absolutely no worries at all. I saw a Challenger at a car show not too long ago with 265's on 15x8" rims and he had no relo kits or aftermarket parts. Look a little chunky but it did fit.

My only experience is with 15 X 7 inch rallyes, and with 245-60-15 radials on them they will rub at a full lock turn. I wont go any bigger than 235-60-15's on the front, 275-60-15's on the rear.

Really, what backspacing? I have 245's/60/15's and I'm not rubbing at any stage.

 On the front of my Challenger I have 15x7's Centerlines with a 3 5/16 Back spacing, They rubbed the front corner with 235/60/15, so I went with 225/60/15's. Even with these it's pretty close. I'd like to get a little more offset so I can squat the car down a little.
 Hey NZ do you have problems hitting the fender support up top?

NZ, thats with the standard 4 1/2 inch BS wheel. This is on a cuda, but i dont think there is much difference. The tire would rub the frame rail at full lock. Not much of a rub, but it did do it. Also, this past year at Carlisle, my 71 Cuda RF tire caught the edge of the fender as i was backing up into it's space (on the hill on wet grass) just enought to "pop" the wheel well moulding slightly. I was at full lock backing into the space. Dont ask me why the e bodies had the WORST parking spaces in all of the show field???  After that first day, i parked with the CC crew at the tent !

Nope, not at all.....full lock, bumps and underload. 


Thanks hemi71 - Weird how some cars do things and others don't with the same setup.
I've even seen the exact same exhaust setups and engine combos with different hp reads etc....


Aha, could be due to the engine weight you think? For hitting the top fender part anyway.
You would have rubbed with a HEMI engine, right H71?

The tire would rub the frame rail at full lock. Not much of a rub, but it did do it.

I have a nice little black mark on my frame rail from the rubbing. Also make sure when you are turning that there isnt a dip or pothole in the road or the tire might hit the inner lip of the fender and crack the paint a little bit....this happened to my dad's car, isnt noticable and it could be covered by wheel lip moldings. If it happens multiple times it will probably chip the paint.

Thats right NZ, that was a 472 hemi. Weight should not be a factor, since the ride height is the same, the torsion bars adjust to negate the weight diff.

Maybe it's a challenger/cuda thing??

Could be....I guess. I'm definitely not getting any rub (was thoroughly checked during restoration) and you got rub so I guess it could be. I definitely wouldn't go through the resto I did to come out of it and my tyres rub. lol


  Oh well, I guess we really confused hopalong now.

Thanks guys!  I really would like to run larger diameter rims, 17" maybe 18"''.  I love the look of ralleys, but I want a more modern performance feel from my car.  I believe that larger rims, lower sidewall perfoemance tires will help with that (plus allow for better braking performace).  I have a friend with a 2000 corvette, and my plan is to at least hang with him on the twisties or autocross track in my Challenger.  I have already whooped him in his own car, now he won't let me drive it!

I saw this one at the Goodguy's Charlotte show. I think it had 17" on the front and 18" on the rear.  Looked good from all angles and kept the "stock" appearance.
