Does Anyone on Board have a Gear Vendors Unit?
« on: February 01, 2006 - 06:22:43 AM »

Me and Glen (Plum6Pak) would like to know if anyone has a Gear Vendors Under/Over unit in their TorqueFlite-727?

If so is it any good, better performance?? Let us know please.

Cheers,

The only one I can think of is that guy with the 600+ CI hemi. Dont know if its a gear vendors for sure, but he did say it was a 3speed with 3 overdrives...sounds like a gear vendors to me. Could be a gearvendors on another manufacturer transmission.....anyone know?

Not sure, there was rumor that Keisler Automotive were going to make new performance automatic transmissions similar to the Gear Vendors units. But they won't be on the market yet, you'd know when they were available.

There is a guy on the UK Challenger board (admin).
Dave is his name, I know he has a GV unit and speaks very highly of it.

Sure I have a Gear Vendors unit on my 73 Challenger.  It is behind a 440/727.  The gear ration is 3.73 and I love the unit.  They can say that you have 6 speeds but in all reality you have 4 speeds with just the gear vendors providing the overdrive (a lot of shifting to manipulate trans and gear vendor).  The unit works well and I have had no problem with it with 6500 mile under its belt.  I also have 3500 stall torque converter and have had no problems.

Thanks for the input mate, sure does sound like fun.
When did you install the overdrive button? I've heard some guys put it on the floor for the left foot others prefer it on there shifter. Was it kind of weird to get use to? Splitting gears, on/off, etc.....
I'm sure I'd wreck the trans by splitting the wrong gear eg: from 3rd into 1st over at 120mph lol  :22yikes: :lol2:

Got any videos of your ride going pretty hard, I want to know what it sounds like.
I've heard one (I think) sounded exactly or close to a super stock NHRA car shifting gears...bloody awesome!

It is on the floor next to the dimmer.  It has a switch that you can shift manually or it will do it automatically.  In automatic mode it only shifts at a programmed speed.  Mine is at 50mph with is the point that I gets about 3000rpm in 3rd.  If drag I place it in manual and go through the gear on the trans. and the gear vendor manually.  I have a B&M ratchet shifter on the 727.

Looks great mate...bet it's a heap of fun.
You'll have to watch that you don't high beam the finish line instead of shifting to 4th over. lol  :lol2:

It states that you go 28% faster, is it true.
Without any other mods except the GV unit did you notice a vast improvement?  :dunno:

I'm getting one..........I found this video clip on their site.
Didn't use to work for me but tonight it did! Man, oh man that is awesome!!

Just like a sequential, F1 car or pro stock vehicle.
Only thing I didn't like or makes me nervous is the lag or slight halt between the original gears.

When he shifts to overdrive it's sharp and fast (also sounds kick a$) but when he turns over drive off and goes into the primary gear it dips then clicks....I'm hoping it's driver error?

I know it takes time to get it smooth, working out when to turn OD off and shift at the same time into your next gear to get it bang on....is this the case??? If not you can get it all over the place?

Here's the video: http://www.gearvendors.com/videoclips/hotrodnewz_broadband.wmv
It's at about 6:30 minutes in but worth watching, great video.

Cheers,
NZ

Just watched the video and I would say that that he is not getting on it very hard.  As I said I have 3.73 gears and it is much quicker going through the gears than that and there is not that dip unless you are not on it very hard.

Cool thanks mate. I sent an email (pretty big one) to Gear Vendors with some questions.
Once that's done I will be ordering a kit for my Challenger.  :bananasmi :ylsuper: :burnout:

Can't wait!!!!  :swaying:

Gotta have one! Sounds cool, can't believe how little rpm difference there is, I didn't realize it was a clutch pack with a simple hydraulic release, neat setup, looks like it would be just about bullet proof. 4.10's will be fun, low end launch like a missle and high end will be like having 3.23's! YeHaw!  :woohoo:

Yip.....I found out my Challenger was running, get this, ready, 2:76 gears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :eek7: :sly:
That's great because she still goes hard. lol I'm not going 4:10's as planned instead going with 3:55's as I thought, get a MUCH better take off and still get the same cruising gear I have now, 2:76.

Ordered and on it's way from Year One.  :bananasmi :ylsuper:

NZ, that's awesome! I imagine it'll be a fun upgrade to experience. Please let us know how well it fits in the tranny tunnel. Heck, even better, takes some pictures!   :dogpile:

Should be good but I heard there are some modifications needed, and, as usual each car seems to bring different problems to the fix so there is no sure fire quick-fix. But, it will fit, it adds 14" to the TorqueFlite-727.

Gearing is my only ponder.... :( ??? 3:55's (2:76 top end) or 4:10's (3:20)
