my first MOPAR.....the "Cursed CUDA"......pix
« on: February 02, 2006 - 09:26:49 PM »
...from 1971 to 1973 I lived in China, and while living there I kept seeing a 70 Cuda on the streets from time to time.....I had always been a GTO/Chevelle fan, but the CUDA certainly caught my attention in the land of Datsuns....it was Rallye Red with Elastometric Bumpers and black interior....I never knew what engine it was because it was always at a distance and I never got to look it over really close...

...returning to the world in the spring of 1973, I had my dad order a new 73, 340 CUDA, Rallye Red w/black interior, automatic...all options except a vinyl top and the side stripe...unfortunately it was damaged in transport and had to have minor roof damage repaired before my wife even took delivery of it....she drove it one day and was rear ended causing a considerable amount of damage to the CUDA...

...shortly after the car was repaired, we moved to San Antonio Texas for a couple of years....the CUDA was unfortunately a lemon fron day 1....it was worked on and worked on by the Chrysler dealership, almost weekly, for the entire time we lived there...it wouldn't idle...ran fine, ran like a scalded dog, but it wouldn't idle...

in 1977, living in Indiana again, a major ice storm caused my neighbors tree to split and crushed the roof down to the seats....my brother in law repaired it this time and painted it a dark maroon...

about this time in life, I wanted a vintage Vette(first of many as it turned out), a 1961....I sold the CUDA to a kid that worked for me....the second night he owned it,  it was sideswiped sitting in front of his mothers house....the drivers side was trashed from rear to front....several days later he lost control of the car and put it backwards thru a barbed wire fence...now it was sideswiped and the rear was slightly mangled AGAIN, plus it has barbed wire scratches all the way to the top of the roof....a few days later, the car was rammed head on by his ex wife who was highly pi$$ed he was driving a new CUDA and she still wasn't getting child support(she had a valid point I guess)....it was totally fixed again at my brother in laws shop.....several weeks later it went swimming in 10 feet of water and the gang(under the influence again) had to swim out of it....last I ever saw the CUDA, it was hobbling down a street, rusted all the way to the side marker lights...I assume it is long dead, that CUDA honestly seemed cursed....

the amazing "Cursed CUDA" on Day 1 of it's short horrible existence..

I'm wondering about the 'Cuda in China - maybe it was a communist officials Red car ?

Did your dad work for the american consulate ?

no, I was in the military...

there were quite a few American cars there, mostly late fifties boats and they were painted black...

Boy did that Cuda have a rough life. Hope your other stories have happier endings. I've never had one that had it that rough. I'll bet the China Cuda is long gone but that had to be neat seeing it just the same.

Wow, freaky story!  Thanks for sharing!  Would love to hear some more stories you have!

As I was reading your post I kept thinking of the movie Christine.  It would be real freaky if you saw that car again but restored and the owner had similar stories to tell!!!
