408 Update

There is not much left now - just a few details before I drop her in!  It's a 408 with a Magnum top end, Hughes hydraulic roller cam and Edelbrock heads.

Are you using a magnum block or is it pre-magnum?  I have a couple of 5.9 magnum cores around and have thought about doing a stroker motor myself with the eddy heads and all.  I think Mopar Performance has cast aluminum valve covers for magnum heads.

It's a pre-magnum/LA block.  Mopar is the only maker of Magnum valve covers as far as I know. They are $200 US.  Pre-magnum covers do fit.

I like what you did with the stock valve covers though!  Just curious, why did you go with magnum style heads?  It seems that since you are a pre-magnum bolck and eddy heads, I thought you would have gone with LA style heads.  Just curious.

Primarily for rocker arm choice/price as they take Chevy rockers.  Also, the heads have vertical bolting and 10 valve cover bolts which  is nice.
The valve covers are just painted now but I may have them powder coated later on.

Any ideas on power output yet?  I am very interested in this combo.  What ratio rockers did you use?

According to Hughes Engines this combo has put out 460-480 hp on the dyno.  The bottleneck will be the heads as they have only a clean-up, port match and back cut valves.  They flow about 10-15 cfm more than the stock Eddys.  With porting they would have recommended more duration.  I am using Comp Cams Promagnum 1.6 rockers which gives me about 0.525 lift

If finally got it started after numerous electrical problems (see posts) and an extremely noisy power steering pump that got me worried for a few minutes.  I got the initial timing done and it sounds pretty good.   The distributor has way too much advance in it so I'll have to deal with that soon. There are no leaks! It's quiet with the TTI exhaust and the Hughes cam has only a mild lope (I would of liked a little more).  It's going to be bit of a sleeper.  I hope to have the first test drive in a week or so.

I make a habit of not breakin gin new engines with the power steering belt on just so you don`t have to shut down during the 20 minute break in

Good advice.  I went with the roller cam so break-in isn't critical.  Another $100 and I've got a rebuilt Saginaw pump in there now.(after the $100 earlier this week for a new ignition switch and signal switch)
