Thanks for the input lads, much appreciated. I guess I built Lucy to be the all rounder, quick around town and at home on the highway. I'm really bummed because I've been cruising with 2:76's so upgrading to 4:10's and the GV I actually increase my full consumption (3:20's in OD), not decrease it which is why the majority of people buy GV for!


At this point in time I'm leaning towards 3:55's best of both worlds, that will be a huge difference to me coming from 2:76 gears to 3:55's and still having the best tall gear you can have is great.

I will be going to the resto shop tomorrow to have a good long discussion about gears and I'll take the chart I made to show them whats what. I really need to take Lucy out and sit at those different rpms to see if the 4:10's 2495rpms at 65mph is livable....I may get in and think sheesh this isn't as bad as I thought....

Though, the 3:55's drops me down another 350rpm so..... ???
I won't be getting any sub frame connectors for Lucy I feel they way she has been built and the amount of hp she is pulling out are quite safe. She drives perfectly at the moment even stretching her legs out with 2:76's at 80mph+ she is smooth and steady.

Bamakx - What size are your rims? 275/60?

Just to toss my two cents in ...  I had a 340 that was bored .030, decked, had the heads ported, and had a "Chevy roaster" cam.  I started with a 4.10 rear and had no problems burning my M50-15s all day long.  Problem was they spent more time burning and less time turning.  I went to a 3.55 and found that I had a better hole shot and saved some money at the pumps.  Therefore, I would strongly recommend the 3.55s - especially after seeing the pump prices you posted on the other thread.

Thanks my friend....great advice and something that actually crossed my mind.
Lower gears doesn't mean the worlds fastest ET, sometimes (I've heard gurus say this too) it gets worse.

Hooking up with 3:55's and getting a clean take off is very tempting and a big reason I am leaning towards the 3:55's. Plus with the GV unit 3:55's will be plentiful, short ratios and still the awesome 2:76 high gear.

Where you running a LSD in your ride with the 4:10's? Size tyres was 275? 265?

Carl,

I'm sorry I do not know what the metric size is for those tires.  I bought them back in the early '80s, therefore the old U.S. measurements.  Outside of the engine work I described, and a 3500 pound clutch, everything about my old Cuda was stock. (Boy, I sure hated selling Charlie ... and I kick myself every day for having done so!!!).

Anyway, you'll be happy with the 3.55s.

Lucy will be getting 3:91 gears.  :ylsuper: :bananasmi :naughty: :burnout:
A nice intermediate gear, 3:73's would also be good but I wanted close to 4:10s without being 4:10's.  :lol2:

I feel that this gear will give Lucy the best launch even over the 4:10's.
4:10's maybe a little too much, 3:55's not enough and 3:73's close....3:91's will give me everything I need.

The cruising gear with OD is 3:05 which runs 2380rpm @ 65mph.  :grinyes:
Can't wait...funny that...3:55's or 4:10s for the last day have been blasting my head....
Then I/We/info help choose 3:91's instead....gotta love it. lol

This is always a good topic...lots of opinions!

I'd go with the 3.91's with the GV. Good compromise with the OD, gives you bottom end pull and top end is still quite liveable with the OD on the GV.

3.73's might be good also, if i remember correctly, that gear set is not available in all 8 3/4 cases, so you should check into that if you are going to change the center section you have in the car now.

Hmmmm, I don't think I'll need them TC...I have 400hp maximum and roughly 500-lbs-ft of torque.
Not quite top fuel power. lol Not quite anyway.  :icon16: Factory cars with 4:10s didn't need them and with Lucy's set up as is (non-stock tyres/suspension) I figure she'll handle it well.



Hey NZ, just because the factory 4:10 cars didn't come with any subframe connector, it didn't mean they couldn't use them.  The factory did not give much thought to that kind of thing back in the day.  A lot of people didn't.  Think of it this way; you have 400 h.p.  How much do you think you waste by the chasis flexing, weather you can see it or not.  I have seen plenty of cars with lower h.p. beat higher h.p. cars just because the power was getting to the ground.  When your car body flexes, which way do think it flexes?  I doubt that it is flexing the rear down, helping the tires plant.  I would be real happy with 400 h.p., as long as I know it was not being wasted twisted my body up.  Just some thoughts.

 Good choice in gearing NZ, now you will have the best of both worlds. I went from 3.23's to 3.91's in my old 70 383 Challenger and it really woke it up around town  :burnout: :ylsuper: Your really going to like the response. And best of all with the GV you'll still have the gears for some low RPM freeway drives.
 I'll be looking for some 3.91's for my 72 Challenger too. I can't afford a GV but I might hunt down a A518 tranny.
