MR. NORMS...triple black Challenger T/A
« on: February 11, 2006 - 08:16:35 PM »
...I was buying a lot of T/A Challengers in the late 1980s....I ran into this one sorta by accident one day...it was from the Streeter Illinois area....the car had been painted a gold metalflake when new and had a hole cut in the hood for a breather to stick thru....the story goes the first owner paid for the car by drag racing it at every opportunity...it was very successful(rumored to be unbeaten)....it was sold with about 2K miles on the odometer and the second owner stored the car for about 13 years....upon bringing the car out of long term storage they discovered the remains of the family cat in the front floor which had disappeared about 13 years earlier(they replaced the carpet)....the car was sold to and restored by a guy in Il....he supposedly went to prison for illegal dealings of sorts and the car was hidden by friends till there was a chance to sell it for him...the car next went to Missouri where it was detailed a little more and he advertised the car in Hemmings...he called me to buy a 71 CUDA 340 convertible I had advertised in Hemmings the same issue....we tried to do a trade but I sold the CUDA to a collector in Washington while the owner of the T/A was still trying to make the deal work....I finally just called him and bought the T/A straight out($19,500)....it was delivered and looked like a million $$$....it still had only 3400 original miles and was nearly 20 years old....since it had never been in the weather it had zero rust.....a friend of mine detailed the undercarriage and engine box to better than new....I showed the car several times locally and it was on display on the midway at the MOPAR Nats under the Paddocks tent around 1989, I drove it a few more hundred miles then let it set for a few more years before selling it to a collector in Michigan....he owned the car for several years and found out the T/A was an original "MR. NORMS" car....it still resides with the owner I sold it too(last I knew anyway).......

4spd, triple black, window louvers, documentation out the wazoo, I talked to all the owners before me except the very first one and he is either dead or abducted by aliens....never could track him down....

I took this picture in the day before digital cameras, sorry

on display inside the local Chrysler Plant....

....during a plant openhouse, Bob Lutz admired the vintage black Challenger T/A for about 20 minutes asking me question after question....

Very cool story!
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Very Cool story, another great car Daytona!! What was your favorite of all the ones you owned? Any reason you stuck with the T/A you own now?   :wow:

48 T/As with the louvers are known so far.

81 T/As from Mr. Norms dealerhip are known, but he told me that he sold over 400 of them.  :wow:

my favorite T/A....for looks, the triple black, it was beautiful inside out and upside down....I still have people ask me about the car 10 years after I sold it....

my favorite T/A....that I drove alot, a red/red 4spd(40K miles)....it was also unusually beautiful, but it drove better than any T/A I ever owned...it was bought new in Houma La. by a drag racer named Sidney Bonnecarre(sp?)...he sold it to a guy in Detroit and I bought the car on my birthday around 1987....I sold it to a disc jockey in Tampa Fl. a few months later, then brokered it to a collector in Michigan....lost track of it after that....heard it was in the Carolinas, but I don't know for sure..

the Plum T/A is the first PLUM CRAZY T/A I ever owned....also the nicest by far....it still has only 50K miles and is all original except paint(painted in 1983)....never any rust or body damage....matching numbers, 4spd....it has it all....when I liquidated my remaining MOPARs several years ago, I gave the PLUM CRAZY T/A to my son and a PANTHER PINK T/A to my daughter....they both kept the cars several years and sold them.....I ended up buying the purple one back about 3 years later....it will never be for sale again....I bought it the first time in 1988($14,500) and the second time about 2002($28K)...the PLUM CRAZY T/A has been in Hot Rod, Car Craft, at least 2 MOPAR Magazine covers, and several MOPAR magazine feature articles, numerous hardcover coffee table books.....it has had its share of publicity thru the years and now it rests quietly in a bubble among my other toys...

Daytona, your stories are highly appreciated. I'm sure there are some collectors like yourself come here but never share the stories like you do.  It 's the stories that really make these cars that much more special.

I remember your black T/A very well from the Nats at Indy!!!  I can honestly say, that in all my years of going to shows, I can not think of another car that struck me as cool looking as your black car did at that show.  That car looked incredible.  I think that was the same year there was another tx9 T/A for sale in the corral?

another "bubble car"

2003 Viper SRT...another long story behind this one...a one off prototype Viper built by AutoForm in Holland Michigan...it currently has 400 miles on the odometer and spends just about all its time in the bubble...
