Can't find a buyer????
« on: February 13, 2006 - 08:32:32 PM »
With all the modern muscle cars do you think the older muscle car market is taken a back seat to modern muscle?

In a perfect world everyone would have enough money to buy all the cars they want, but realistically most people can only afford 1 to 2 pleasure / fun vehicles and must make decisions on which one to buy.  With modern muscles cars like the new Mustang and Challenger and slightly used sports cars like the Vette and Viper is it possible that we will see the slowing of prices on the older e-bodies?  Think about it.... right now most of all the new muscle cars will be making 400 to 550 HP and doing it with air condition and ABS.  You can get them for between 30k and 40k.  That's a great deal on a viper when you think that they were over 80K new!

The only reason I bring this up is that I was thinking of buying another e-body, but I keep thinking about the new Challenger or maybe another Viper.  5 years ago it wouldn't have been a decision... there was no new Challenger and the vipers were all to new to be a good value.  Back then nothing could touch the looks and power of e-bodies for the money (supply and demand) and the prices went up.  But in today's market it is looking different to me.

We all know there will always be the die hard fan base for the e-bodies (me included), but there will be less and less buyers in the very near future because of the new Hemi's and Modern Muscle.  I don't think the e-bodies will go down in value, but I just don't see the rocket ship prices continuing.  And buyers might be a little harder to find.

What would you take if the price was the same... a 1970 383 Cuda or a 1996 GTS Viper?

Would you rather have a..... 1970 383 Challenger or the NEW 6.1 HEMI Challenger?

This post is not ment to anger anyone, just my rambling thoughts about my next purchase.

I'd take the old muscle car every time, definitely the old Challenger over the new Challenger. Not knocking the new one at all, it's a great looking car, but there is just something about the vintage Mopar e-bodies that grabs you and won't let go. Just my :2cents:

If I could only have one "fun" car, it would be an old Mopar. Since i'll have several, I'm aiming to get the new challenger when it comes out. The old Mopars will always have the advantage of appreciation....right now the newer cars still depreciate, while the musclecars appreciate. And a part of this for me and many others is nostalgia, having the cars of my younger days, and Vipers and such dont fulfill that role.

And BTW, nothing they build today looks like the pic below.

I would take the viper because I love the GTS' and like you said before, it has more creature comforts and is faster. However, between the new and old Challenger, definatly the old Challenger...mainly because I love 70 Challengers and I wouldnt want a car that everyone else will have. About your point of the prices going down, they will in a couple years. Most of the new buyers of these cars are the people that grew up with these cars and could never afford one when they were younger. Once that age group starts dieing off, prices will too.

Good points.  The smart money is to buy the cars kids are dreaming about right now and sell it to them when they have more money god!

I see your piont Cody , how ever i would always have to keep some kind of classic Muscle in my garage , i wouldn't mind having both at the same time . You see alot of corvette owners with the new C5 or C6 cars with somekind of older vette in there garage . it's all in the same old story, what your able to afford. If  I could I would have one of everything . :wavingflag:

C1, it's your car that has me thinking so much.  I think you have a very nice vehicle and should be able to get what you're asking for it.  I'm starting to think it would have been easier even just a year ago to get what you want for it.

I really would like to have a 71!

When I win the lottery I'll have the hotest Viper ya can buy, and the new Challenger has become a distinct possibility when it come out. But otherwise any money that can be spent for such fun toys will absolutely be on old school Mopars. They are still # 1 in my opinion poll !

I have joked about that very subject with my wife. I told her i would sell my 70 Cuda for a new chally. It does look nice.... but when they come out there will be lots of them on the streets to be seen and had. The number of 70 cudas will not increase, just the price will. I will stay with the old muscle, there is nothing that stands out better than them. IMO  :burnout:

Any way you slice it, old school Mopars will not go down in value. Mostly because there were so few made. With the big debate over values, I say still go for it. With today's Mustang, the older Mustangs still hold their value, even though there were millions made. Now, with today's build quality, which car do you think will still be standing proud 25 years from now? With electronic controls/OBDII, you never know if there's a Pandora's box in there. Can't go wrong with old school!  :grinno:

I tend to disagree, as when we're (baby boomers) gone so is the interest. For example, anyone interested in owning a 1927 Model T in mint condition? :grinno:

You're comparing apples to oranges. I might take a Foose altered 1927 model T with a blown hemi and keisler 5 speed. As for choice, I'll own both old muscle and new muscle. Why should you have to make a choice? When the Challengers come out, I'll own at least one. If they decide to release a Chrysler Cuda, I'll buy one of those as well. I bought a Go-Mango Daytona Ram last year and love driving it. It certainly drives nicer than my old cars, but it will never replace one of them.
