Anyone running a 3" flowmasters system on their e-body
« on: February 13, 2006 - 09:03:41 PM »
I'm thinking of getting the flowmaster 3" exhast system from the headers back, the system includes the series 40 mufflers.  Anyone have this exhaust on their car?  I want to put this on my 70 Cuda with a 340 4-speed.  Any feedback would be appriecated, other recommendations are also welcome.  I like the sound of the flowmaster mufflers that is why I'm thinking this system.   Also, TTI stuff is out of the question due to cost.

-Thanks

I had flowmasters on my hardtop and I think they sound great!  So what kind of 340 is this you are running??  I think the 3 inch is an overkill and actually you may gain more horsepower with a smaller pipe size.   :2cents:

 :iagree:
3" on a 340 is too big , you will gain bottom end power & better all out HP with the 2.5" mandrel bent system , flowmasters seem very restictive & over turn color & or peel paint off them due to trapped heat , better milage & power should be available with Dynomax or Hooker Aero chamber mufflers

Thanks for the replys.  My current 340 is bored 0.030 over with KB hyper pistions.  It has the 'X' heads with a stock 1973 intake and an eddy 600 carb.  The cam I am currently running is a Comp Cams HE268H (not XE268H), cam specs are 218/218 duration and .454/.454 lift.  I plan on switching out the cam, intake, and carb in the future but not within the next 6 months.

So it sounds like the 3" exhaust would not be a good move and I should go with 2.5"

Chyco, you recommended a couple of mufflers,  how do these sound compared to the flowmasters.  I really want an exhaust that gives the car more of pro stock kind of sound.

4cruzin, what recommendations on mufflers do you suggest.

I do like the sound of the flowmasters but I would be open to other brands if they had a similar sound.

Also, what recommedations on exhaust piping systems do you guys recommend (minus the headers, I already have those).

-Thanks

My dads 340 has a Magnaflow exhaust on it and I love the sound of it. I tried to get an audio clip of it a while back and it didnt come out that well. I will say that I like the sound, look, and quality of the Magnaflows over the Flowmasters. I liked it so much that I already have a set of Magnaflows for my 451.

I had 2 1/2" with 50 series flowmasters on my 340 with almost the same exact specs as yours.  Ran like a bat outta hell and the sound was awesome!  40 series is a bit loud for my taste but they do give that "pro-stock" sound you're looking for.

I am running the 3" flowmaster with the super 40 mufflers on my 360 crate engine. the sound is incredible, never heard anything that mean. although the installation was a bit difficult because the pipes won't line up with my headers so i sorta did a temporary fix until i can get the proper pipes. But i would recommend the flowmasters, although if i did it again i might go with 2.5 inch instead.

Marbury, you mention that if you had to do it all over again you would go with 2.5", why is that, because of the installation problems?  Also what cam are you running in the 360?

well the installation would be the same i would think, but with teh 3 inch mine sounds crazy and maybe a little too loud for the street but hey its fun so i don't care, but i would probly go 2.5" if i got a new system. as for the cam its a mopar performance crate motor so i'm not sure. Hydraulic roller camshaft - .501''/.513'' lift; 288°/292° duration is what is says on the website for their 390hp engine mine is the 380hp one but i am sure its the same or very similar.

Well I have flowmasters on both my cars as I love the sound of them.  But I'm currently installing a big block in the hardtop and am thinking about my 3" exhaust I'm gonna install and what mufflers I'm gonna go with too!  I am concerned about how loud the flowmasters are . .

yes they are loud and i wouldn't recommend driving it after 11:00pm but hey its fun as hell to drive and if they don't see you coming they will definately hear you. Can't wait til the snow melts.

I think I'm gonna go with these muffler(click on 99 mustang at the top)instead of flows.

Here's alittle flow comparison

I have been kicking around what to do for my exhaust system, whether to make my own with a x-pipe and some flwmaster taillpipes.

Flowmaster series 40's are extremly loud. I have a set on my 440 and it makes it hard to hear the stereo just about all of the time but I am only running headers and mufflers , no exhaust pipes out the back yet.
You really get noticed a lot but when a ricer pulls up beside you at the red light and revs his joke of a car you can replay the scene from 2 fast 2 furious on his jap mobile. :roflsmiley:

i do have pipes all teh way back and when you are trying to talk to someone you pretty much have to yell. but whoi needs talking and music anyway...and yes those ricers can go back to where they came from.
