Rare find AAR
« on: February 18, 2006 - 03:33:33 PM »
Several years ago a buddy told me about an AAR he saw years earlier. He said it was sitting in the guys garage or barn and looked to be complete. Then he told me he didn't remember where it was but it was off this country road. I thought at first he wanted it for himself but he later said he had no interest in the car. My wife and I use to take rides in the country trying to find the car. This went on for months and months. If we saw a garage door open or barn door we would slow down to a crawl. We must have looked like combine stalkers.
Let me jump ahead so I don't bore you to death with every dead end we hit. One SUnday we are calling it quits in the FK5 AAR when this guy in a pickup is coming at us on this narrow country road. We both slowed to a crawl and he yelled out his window, "is that a real AAR". I said it yeas and he said do you want to see another. It was the AAR we heard about. He is really a decent guy. He bought the car from his brother in 1977 for $1700.00. I've offered him some serious cash but the car is a great memory for him. It's kinds of cool the car means more than money and the two of us have become good friends.  I'll attach some pictures.

Nice story!!  Just never know what you might see when you look in peoples garages!  I sell houses and always have to check out all the garages and barns when working just to make sure no cool cars are hiding anywhere!  lol   Glad you at least made a friend out of the deal!

Nice story, but she is like the lil pampered and spoiled gal of your youth who lived next door.........can't touch it. Well at least the AAR has an appreciative owner, hopefully one day he will allow the beast to once again roar and turn up some asphalt. Thanks for sharing, BTW, I live in Ohio too, care to share where........................? :roflsmiley:

great car ----have you ever tried to get your friend to get it up and running.maybe the sweet rumble would be enough for him to enjoy it once again. That story hits home with me because i love to search out stries or leeds on cars and that has led to some very good friendships.

Cool story! I only have 7 AARs on file so far with the louvers and they all have vinyl tops. Do you know if they are original to the car?

Wow, talk about Deja Vu, this was a cool display at the local Word of Wheels show last night. Original AAR guy had for 15 years. 4 spd, Rim blow, console.

Oh she is not pampered. Here is another picture and the stuff on the floor has an nasty odor. When I was crawling around under the car the fermented coon and cat dung was ripe. Oh the lenghts we go to for our cars. My wife knew when I got home I hadn't been out at the bar.
It's an interesting story on the life of the car. It left the factory as a column shift and bench seat and FY1 Lemon twist. The first owner didn't like the color and painted it brown months after the purchase from the dealer. His brother used it to pull the boat around and as general transportation. The current owner had a pop or two and bent it up a little. He always wanted a Hemi Orange car and that is how it has stayed since he painted it. I don't think the louvers are Cuda.
The car has not been on the road since the early 80's and just sits. Both Rear Quarters have been repalced back in the day of factory OEM panels and are done right.  You know how some guys wrap them around the door striker area and mud them in. These are done with Spot welds. I forgot to check for the roll on the front fenders. The trunk pan needs replaced and a small hole by the gas pedal. Other than that she is solid. The passenger side hood has some cracks where it bolts to the hinge. The engine runs fine as he starts it once in a while.
I'd have to get his okay to post the tag with Barry. I have a picture of the Fender tag though and will see what he says.
Thanks for the positive comments and my typing still stinks.
