1970 Challenger r/t.... for sale (help with value) PICS
« on: February 21, 2006 - 12:34:38 PM »
There is a 1970 Challenger R/T for sale.  The guy wants $10,000 for it.  I have not seen it yet... will be going over tomorrow.

The story is that he bought it 3 years ago and it has a 340 in it now.  The VIN is JS23NOE110XXX.  I'm told that the fender tag is there (I had to tell him where to look to see if it was there) but painted over so the numbers are hard to read.  It's an LA car, so I'm sure there is no build sheet.... Urrr (sorry) Broadcast sheet.  :swear:  He was told it was originally a white car with a 318.  The VIN says otherwise, but I check for sure tomorrow.  It doesn't really matter to much as the original motor is long gone.

So what do you guys think it is worth?  The trunk, floor pans and quarters need replacing.  it runs, but it needs a lot of work. :working:

Looks nice, I guess how bad do you want it? Is it currently driveable?  And local is a plus   I  just spent 600 in gas to get two of them (both 70's)

$10,000 is not bad but seems slightly high,  Of course this is only my opinion....However if it is VERY SOLID ie, very little rust WELL worth the $$..... As you know matter is in the condition.....will he take an offer. or very firm?

Tom

A 70 R/T and being an LA car I would imagine very little rust is worth all of 10K IMO.

Check it out carefully and go for it.

Thanks Tom!

He did say that he was "offered" $7,000 and turned it down.  He told me that he has had 7 people look at it and not a sinngle person has bought it yet.  He paid $5,000 for it 3 years ago.

I'll check it out and see if the numbers on the car match the VIN and so forth....

If anyone wants it, just let me know.

Yep, 383 4 bbl.

I could see how you could get it confused with a 318.

Three-eight-three
Three-eighteen

they both start with three eight

It's a true R/T and if it's relatively rust free, I'd say it's a good deal.

He told me that he has had 7 people look at it and not a single person has bought it yet.

There have been surprises. Take TropicalCat's LA built plum crazy R/T. (Hi TC!) Broadcast sheet was found under the right passenger seat glued onto the floor. Hopefully you'll have good results once you go through every single nook and cranny.

I find it hard to believe 7 people looked at the car and no one has grabbed it yet. It's a R/T! Check for any hidden damage that the owner might not be disclosing, bring your magnets handy for checking bondo! Check the front and rear end frame rails as well for any "repairs" done in the past. Keep us posted how it goes. Offer $8,500-9k cash, he might just take it!

It's getting to the point that there aren't a lot of 70's to choose from, especially R/T cars. If it's a real R/T car then it would have to have had a 383, 440, 440-6 or 426. The least desirable would be the 383 of course. From the photos it looks like it might get by with lower quarter patch panels, but photos can be deceiving. If the car is fairly complete and rust is limited to floors and lower quarters, then the car is definitely in the ballpark as far as value is concerned. I've seen R/T cars sell for much more on e-bay that looked great but probably needed as much or more work as this one.
Vin should start with "JS" if it's a real R/T car.

I went to see it today.  Here's what I found....

Lots of rust... everywhere! (Trunk was gone) :(
Lots of Bondo around the bottom of the rear window.  Over ½" think in spots!
Someone put a "JS" VIN dash (ralley) in the car, it's fender tag, door VIN and cowl all list a "JH" 318 engine (Title nightmare!)
Front radiator support has been replaced.

Within 2 seconds I was ready to leave.

:wow: Never buy a car without seeing it first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smart move CODY......

If you happened to get the full VIN of the 318 and R/T tag, give it to BarryT/A for his records. Can't have someone using that and making a phony R/T. Maybe the original R/T that dash came out of has an owner looking for the matching dash/VIN tag? But likely that car was wrecked/trashed sometime in the past.
