Gathering Ideas - Project Cheap Challenger - "Save the Shell"
« on: February 21, 2006 - 06:20:09 PM »
Ok team here's the deal. I can't stand seeing a decent old Mopar just rusting away or hacked into junk by some idiot...........So, I "Saved" a 71 Challenger yesterday from certain doom. Anyway, I can't afford a high dollar E-body nut and bolt restoration, and being it's just a base 318 auto Challenger it's not really worthy of it anyway.

What I am looking for are ideas on how to replace all the missing or broken parts in an effort to restore it to a "nice driver" level of quality. Im looking for cost cutting alternatives but a nice finished, but not nessecerily stock OEM appearance. Here are some pics of the car, I will properly repair the sunroof hack job with either complete replacement roof or a patch, and I will be adding one of our Shaker Hood kits to the flat hood. The rest is up for discussion.

A list of needs:

Needs Front and rear valances
Needs a Passenger fender (might be savable, lower dog leg is rusty)
Needs a Lower rear quarter and trunk extension on drivers has rust
Needs a trunk pan
Needs Door panels
Needs Console (Auto)
Needs a complete dash (I only have a bare frame, pad, and VIN)
Needs a steering column (manual steering car, has box)
Needs a rear bumper
Needs a better grill (center is melted from a brush fire)
Needs engine, trans, rear end, and springs
Needs wheels
Needs Door handles
Needs some glass replaced

Ok guys, lets have some ideas! I'm serious, after we discuss it I will be building this car, maybe it will be the official "Harms Automotive" project car, not certain yet.

Scott,
For the aftermarket sunroof, if you can locate a 1973 -74 Charger sunroof you can use the parts, they fit.  They appear to be larger than the one that is in it too, so food for thought.

You can use a power steering column if you buy the adapter from Firm Feel.

Do you have a drag car yet?

I will have a few of the parts you are looking for at the Seattle show in May.

T/Ake care,
Barry

Good idea Barry, maybe a Sunroof will work, this one is a smaller one for sure and definately a K-mart job, nothing I'll consider leaving in as it is. The car has a real sound body, the floors, firewall, cowel, etc. are mint. Quarters aren't bad either but will need some work.

*Save those parts for me!  :worshippy

*** HI JACK WARNING ****

What show in Seattle?  Barry, you come down from Alaska for a show... I'm sure I can drive 2.5 hours then to the show and meet you!  How about we grab dinner and a drink.  (Crap, did I just ask a guy out?)   What I ment to say was, let shoot the $hit over a beer and talk cars.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Uh, my calendar is full! lol

I think the show dates are May, 6th - Drags at Bremerton

May 7 - Show at Bellevue community college.

I will be staying with my twin brother in Renton, he usually has a BBQ / Mopar get together at his place when I visit, all are welcome. Ask at the show for directions.

Scott, I have most of the parts for a manual sunroof from a Charger as well.

See you there,
Barry

I've never installed one of those, that should be interesting. What are the differences btween it and an E-body roof?

The major difference is that the 1970-71 E- bodies had power sun roofs. The cassettes were the same size as the later B-bodies. The B-bodies were available with the manual or power sunroof.
