Would you replace this?
« on: February 24, 2006 - 01:07:18 AM »
First off, let me thank everyone on this site!  Very helpful people around here. :worshippy

Ok, here's the deal.  The drivers side quarter was off when I bought the cuda.  Here's the questions...

First question, Is the red stuff that the previous owner has put EVERYWHERE on the car POR-15?  It looks brushed on and is under the primer on the top of the car and everywhere else.

Second Qusetion, Do you guys think I should replace the outer wheel fender and the lower trunk extention shown in the pictures?  They do have some rust, but they are the original pieces and they feel fairly solid.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

On the paint, don't know. Probably.

On the panels, heck no! That stuff looks good! All you have are holes where the spot welds were drilled out. The rule of thumb is to keep rot-free metal. Holes can be filled. Rot has to be cut out.

On the fenderwell, you can mig up the holes if you like, you can cut a new flange and weld it on, or you can plug weld those holes to the new quarter skin. That latter is tough because of space...I know. I would make sure that there is enough metal on that lip for your welds on the quarter and go with it. When done, make sure that you thoroughly prime the area and if you are doing undercoating, get that coating on the topside of that lip to fill in any remaining holes.

Id say yes on paint but ditto :iagree:  The metal is in fantastic shape!  Course you probably wont see any of the trunk extension ever, and in the wheel well unless you want it body color, i usually just undercoat it or paint it black as the stones once said

POR15 is normally black although you can buy it in other colors.  I would guess that it is regular primer.  I would leave the metal in if it is repairable which it looks to be.

Is it very good?  Any experience with it? :feedback:

Looks like the old panel was cut off too close to the top edge of the car. If you're going to use a quarter panel skin it might be hard to get it lined up for a but weld.  Or if you don't use a skin the full quarters their making should be for sale soon.  They have them for the Challenger, but their expensive.
