Six Pack Question (clue?)
« on: February 24, 2006 - 07:16:29 PM »
If you recall I have issues with a big bog under spirited driving situations (to the point of dying). Probably when the outboard carbs come into the picture. Anyways just now after driving the car I pulled her into the garage and left her idling. Pulled the air cleaner. Here's the clue/question:
When I manually open the rear carb throttle plate manually, it causes the rpm's to increase (like the center carb would).
When I do the same to the front carb instead of increasing the rpm, it causes the engine to stumble.
What does this mean?
I do not want to go through all the carbs if I don't need to.

So far i've always backed off ...I know I need to try to see if it'll go through it though.
just haven't had it on the right road at the right time yet. it has killed the motor though.
I've driven the car less than a hundred miles so far...

Check the float level of that front carb...is it set correctly?

there are a lot of posiiblilties , start with float level & make sure you have fuel getting to the front carb , see if you can access the idle mixture screws in the carb base under the fuel bowl , check for vacuum leaks , , check to be sure th ebleed orifices are open

air bleeds are at the front of the carb throat just above the venturi , they are tiny brass inserts
generallly yes , as the throttle is opened the RPM will rise but not always , it really sounds lik eth efront carb is not feeding fuel correctly to me sometimes just spraying carb cleaner down the throttle bores can help as well

Do you have a stock cam with stock vacuum?  I've had some "fun" with the 6 pak setup when I changed cams.

I really have know idea. unfortunately i have no records for the rebuild that was performed prior to my purchase. I  need to check the vacuum among other things.
I attempted the front carb float adjustment earlier and now it's flooding into the venturi's. it was like the needle to the inlet stuck open and gas was dribbling in no matter which way i turned it..... :banghead:
gathered more info...Holley website had some good tips  I'll take another stab at adjusting it tomorrow.
I'm looking at the brightside...at least it's the front carb so it's easier to work on than the rear one :smokin:

A vacuum check may tell you alot.   You may just need to have the carbs gone through.

ok so now you have dirt in the needle , so you need to unthread it & clean it , re-install it & set the float level

will that require removal of the bowl or can I remove the whole assembly with the level adjust screw/nut on top.
I'm thinking I may need to remove the bowl to get the level set aprox. now anyways?
S'pose I'd need a new gasket..is that something a Auto parts store would typically carry?

yes you can just unthread the needle out the top of the bowl , gaskets should not be hard to find  but it is a dfiffernt style as it seals the metering plate as well, inside the bowl
