Number Stamping on Rad Support
« on: February 26, 2006 - 09:13:55 AM »
I recently replaced my radiator support from a 22" original damaged in an accident with a 26". The number stamped on my original corresponds to the consecutive order number which now will be different on the 26" support. Does anybody know what would be stamped on a replacement from the factory when it was available and was replaced due to an accident? The numbers don't mean that much to me, I feel lucky I found one at a good price. I've heard of people swaping and welding the original stamp to a different support, firewall or whatever, but that could be considered fraud. The car was not original when I bought it over 20 years ago 340 and 727 as opposed to the 318 904 original, I consider it to be mine and have no plans of ever selling it anyway. Any feedback would be much appreciated, thanks!

Its only fraud if you lie about it.     I would replace the support and not worry about it especially if you have no plans of selling!

The factory replacement parts did not have numbers stamped into them.

You should save the old support as part of the cars history.

Thanks guys, I was definately gonna save the old support, I just went back out to the garage and got the numbers off the supports 22" B0 220313 and 26" B0 421522. I assume the B0 means Barracuda 1970 and the other numbers are the cons. number. I never lie about my car cause I have no plans of selling it and what has been done to it makes it mine. I bought it when I was 18 (21 years ago)  was the first car I owned, spent my college fund on it and actually learned to drive in it. When I bought it it came with a 340 (from a Demon I am told it is stamped as 0-B137294 built at Hamtramck which is cool) and the tranny was upgraded to a 727A before I got it. It was a 318 904 car originally. I am getting 'round now with the help of a great friend to restoring it to it's original EB5 color and replacing/fabricating the sheetmetal that needs it.  I know it will never be a numbers matching car and I really don't care. I have been dragging this car around with me for 21 years through one accident and numerous body man and engine screwup pitfalls in which I lost a lot of driving time. I finally have a nice garage to do the work (although unheated, burrr!). I am gonna leave the Gran Coupe emblems and options (consolette etc) just cause that's what it is and that's the way I bought it. Although I would like some sort of overdrive the 391s really scream at hwy speed. Thanks for the info on the stamping! Hopefully see ya on the road! Sean

The "0" is 1970, but the "B" is the assembly plant, Hamtramck, MI.

Thanks for clarifying the B I should have thought of that, supposedly the rad support came from a HEMI Challenger but who knows. Sean

You still have the stamping on the firewall up by the driver's side pillar. Keep the old rad support section. You never know, with the way the prices have been going, in a few more years you should be able to sell the car for 10 or 12 million?

Yeah, that section appears to be salvagible and now I save anything related to the car with a order number! Unfortunately, as many can relate, I let go of a lot of cool stuff moving from apt to apt, and trying to find a garage or whatever for my car and stuff (lost the original seats with build sheet, ouch!) etc.

I know what you are saying about the prices. Only 7,184 Gran Coupe 2 door hardtops were produced with an 8 cylinder in 1970, how many can be left?? Thanks for the insight! Sean
