paint removal on plastic

I bought a console on ebay and it has a little bit of overspray on it. Does anyone have a way to remove it with out repainting the console, because it is in good shape?

It depends on the console, some models were made or ABS, others (e-bodies) were made of polyethylene and ABS, it depends on what portion you are working on. Post a pick of the overspray and I'll offer some suggestions.

It was from a 71-73 I think. the paint is not in the grain just on the top and as you can see it is green matallic.

On another thread here about grill restorations, we talked alot about how to strip a plastic grill without damaging it. I searched the topic and found a lot of "modelers" who strip plastic models all the time and the most frequently recommended method was with brake fluid.  Problem is that you should SOAK it which makes it difficult for a grill or a console, but it was touted as the most effective, least problematic, and left NO residual damage to the plastic. I'll look for the thread and post it but meanwhile, read this it compares some products including brake fluid and Castrol "Super Clean"..

The pics you posted are of a green console that's been painted black or been repainted several times. The factory did not paint the consoles in various colors, they injection molded them in various colors, the plastic was the same color all the way through and had no paint on it from the factory.


The type of plastic the upper half of that console and lid are (anything with grain on it) is made of PE (Polyethylene)

  That's a green console showing thru the black paint. You can re-dye it black.

The green is a matalic I know its hard to see on the pics. The green by the shifter plate is an adhiesive. There is no other green on the console. If you guys still think its a green console who makes a good dye besides year one?

It's a matter of "Know" not think. They were molded throughout in several different colors, green, tan, black, red, blue, etc. NONE were painted at the factory.

SEMS sells rattle can vinyl dye, it's about the best out there for painting Polyethylene, but the flaking you see will eventually come back (though it may be many years later). PE is VERY chemical resistant plastic, it doesn't like to be painted.

It almost looks like the bottom section of the console is black, but the top section was originally green.  I'd have to say go with SEM vinyl dye to correct this.  It lasts for years and doesn't clog the grain

Quite possible, many consoles have been pieced together from multiple consoles over the years, probably a black base with a green top as you say.

Hey 70ChallengerRT, I don't know if you've read this or not but it's a great thread that you need to read and see about SEM... Rev included some pics of the products complete with part numbers.  If you go to Rev and Red's website you can actually see how theirs worked out.
