Would it be worth it? Your opinion please...
« on: March 03, 2006 - 10:33:11 AM »
Hey guys,
This is about my "barn find" 72 Chally, original 4 speed car. H-code 340, 8.75 rear end, factory 4 speed. NON RALLYE!
I am working out a deal as we speak.
Never restored - been sitting in a barn on a heavy tarp for 21 years. Now she rolls.
Front end has no sheetmetal on it yet, it had been dismantled.
Passenger fender was damaged as well as the hood. Parts car hood, parts car fender. Original paint. K member looks pretty rusty. Front frame looks OK, a bit of surface rust. Front passenger shotgun is  a little shaky. Needs some work.
Pans look pretty good. The trunk seams seem typical- not too rusty, but will do. car is not running.
I figure if this car is worth it, the front end has to be straight, the rust has to be at a minimum. Price is decent, but would like to know what it is worth. I have an idea, but I just want to be in the ballpark. I will post pics once I have "charted" this barn find

Original vinyl top, all interior in decent shape. Original hubcaps. Car is straight, all glass is good.

Let me know your thoughts...

I paid $2000 for mine 2 years ago and the trunk, quarters, drivers floor, trunk lid all need replaced, not to mention a lot of missing parts. If that one is complete it should go for at least $3000 if not more. Also depends on the area you live in, seen some go for $700 to $4000 in the same condition just different areas.

If the trunk isn't rusted thru, and the engine still turns, and the rear quarter panels aren't eaten away... I say let us see pictures(LOL)!!!  Seriously, if the engine isn't locked up, I like the 3 to 5K range. Again, this is a guess without the benefit of having pictures. Keep us updated.

I don`t see the Rallye scoops or stripes? If that is a base 340/4 spd Chalenger it is probably some what rare, either way it looks like a decent project.

I agree that the 4 speed makes it quite desireable, and the peek at the floor pan looks real good.  Also, a good color, I'd jump on it.

the nose is just bolt on stuff. $2500 in parts. that would make the car worth 10 easy.  so 5 grand woulld be a bargain.
just my 2 cents!

Yes, by the book it's an odd bird, but very cool nonetheless.
The front pass shotgun is pretty chewed up, heck it might even be bent. The car was in a slight wreck. No a problem to fab and straighten. I have gathered some comparison pics through this website to help reference the damaged area. This is defineitely a long term project. I have another baby on th eway and this thing would demand quite a bit of time. I just don't want to have to do floorpans. The trunk I can have someone else do when the time comes, but for now it looks livable. There are other spots that are a bit rusty, so we will see.
This Challenger has been sitting for a LONG time.
The paint is COMPLETELY original. Hardly any scratches. I'm thinking of wheeling her out rihgt away,  that way the project will keep me motivated. I have wheeled out much worse, so I have no doubt she'll come back.
Thanks for the advice!

I'd say it'd probably be worth around $3,500-$5,000.00.  It's not all there, but has a desirable engine and transmission combo that'll keep the price somewhat up there.

 :(

Well, I drove 11 hours up to Wisconsin to take a peek with cash in hand.
Honestly, it probably had the cleanest floorpans and trunk I have seen in this "price class"  The cowl wan near perfect, the duthcman was perfect, all the glass was paerfect, the parts car hood was perfect.
Now for the ugly in order of importance.
The frame was bent. It was kinked up at the cowl, and dinged just past the A arm on the frame rail. (side)
The car had tons of condensation rust, and needed new rear quarters, doors, front fenders, a new grille panel, possibly a front passenger wing, and some heavy fab work on the lower A-pillar splash-cowl intersection.
Engine was sitting for 21 years, but it matched. It needed to be torn apart to be saved.
The interior was infested with rodents, but good door panels, Center console,  front and rear and IP.
right rear wheel was locked up.
She had an offer for 5200, and I advised her to go with that offer.
Let me remind you, this was the real deal - a true 4 speed non rally 340/4 barrell car.
My search continues..
Please keep an eye out.

I'm a little late for this party but I was gonna ask about that frame. Usually, when the hood is bent the damage it all the way to the cowl and frame but I guess you found that out.

Sorry it didn't work out but $5200 !!! for a bent, rusted and front end gone Chally?

Yowee
